    "Big Opportunity" vs. "Must Win"

Everyone seems weary of the "must-win" phrase.

Let's replace it with "big opportunity."

    Difference in semantics:

Must-win implies there is little realistic chance of recovery.

Big opportunity is more forgiving. A loss doesn't spell doom; but the more often you lose games like that, similar chances dwindle.

Each time Big-Opp is missed, "must win" occurrences become more frequent.

This weekend's KU game isn't a must-win, but a loss could eventually mean winning at KSU, Baylor or Missouri becomes a must-win.

Re: "Big Opportunity" vs. "Must Win"

I think it's pretty close to must win. This team has zero signature wins and two bad losses. they need to start picking up some quality wins soon otherwise theyre not going to be making the tournament. Losing close games won't get them anywhere.

For every home game you lose, you have to win one on the road.

With Iowa State's road history, each home game becomes a de facto "must win." Right now, the team is +1 (1 home loss, 2 road wins). A positive number is almost mandatory to have a shot at an NCAA bid.

Re: "Big Opportunity" vs. "Must Win"

This game is obviously a great opportunity.

This game is the reason that CA, CB, RW, etc transferred here.

These games are the ones that Freddie took the job to coach in.

Now, I get that since we lost tonight, we suck again. BUT if you can take off the moron glasses that seem to be prevalent, you can see that UT is a young, but very talented team. They needed this win, and they played defense like it.

The fact that this "soft" team couldn't make a shot, and got behind by 18 in the second half, yet hung tough and had a chance to win at the end should be an indicator of how much this group has improved.

Kobongo and the other freshman guard, made HUGE shots for UT. Neither had shown any consistency shooting the ball all year, so hats off to them for stepping up.

The job that Babb did on Brown, and has done all year at that end of the floor, continues to be extremely impressive.

This group will show up Saturday, and be ready to play. It will be tough, but what a great opportunity to play a meaningful game the end of January. Win, or lose, there will be more to come...

Re: "Big Opportunity" vs. "Must Win"

I don't think the game Saturday is a must win, but splitting the next two - at minimum - is critical to our tournament chances.

We are +1 right now (2 road wins vs. 1 home loss) and need to stay that way to get to 10-8 in the league.

I like our chances. Any chance Royce starts shooting free throws Granny-style? Then I'd like our chances more.

THIS. It is unfair to call even a home game with a top 5 team must-win. People getting way out of hand with the must win phrase. Everyone needs to chill, see how the rest of the year plays out. There are still 6 wins out there somewhere even without this game...

I understand that this is the "it" thing from last night, and even this year, but that is not the reason we lost this game. I think it's time to lay off this particular topic, just because it's getting old.

If we lose Saturday then Tuesday is a must win. Not in the sense that we couldn't win out and be OK but in the sense of actual reality.

Re: "Big Opportunity" vs. "Must Win"

You need multiple wins vs top 25 teams to even sniff the NCAAs.

We dont have a win over anyone.

    mizzou, KU, KSU x 2, Baylor x 2.

So thats having 3 more home games to finish with 3 wins over top 25 teams. Thats why this is a must win. Unless you plan on beating top 5 teams on their home floor.

I agree with the OP 100%. KU isn't a must win, but is a helluva opportunity

Only a year and a half after the GMac disaster, I'm just thrilled we're still talking NCAA almost halfway into the Big 12 season. I'll be happy with the NIT and ecstatic if we make the NCAA.

Looking deeply into the schedule, KU is a must win IMO. Going 10-8 and beating teams that you should will not cut it to make the NCAA.

We match up better against KU than Baylor or Missouri. 10-8 with the wins against also rans will not do unless we beat someone better than us.

The KSU home game is also a must win.

We need the win if we want to go NCAA. It is on major TV and we need to shoot the best possible. This means SC needs to take more shots early, Chris Allen take only good shots, Booker play tough defense against TRob, Royce needs to make free throws, and Melvin to be a force inside and the fans to hoot and holler.

Let my Fred's Posse Ride: Georges, Naz, Hogue, Bryce, Nader, Monte, Matt, and McKay.

Not going to argue with you on that because I think college BB has changed some and our non-conf scheduling is very weak, but I do miss those years when Johnny was here and we'd get invited fairly consistently with less than a .500 conference record. Usually had to win a game in KC though and the B12 this year isn't what the B8 was top to bottom.
