    Rooting a phone

OK, people, I am not a tech wiz. I have a HTC Thunderbolt and I know that Ice Cream Sandwich will not be coming to my phone. I have been doing some reading on the way to find that out and the opinion is out there that I should root my phone for better performance. First, can someone tell me what this does and how it affects my phone and second, tell me how to do it or point me to somewhere that tells me how. Like I said, I'm not up on this stuff but in my free time I like to mess with things.

    I'm on Twitter too: Tre4ISU

    Or so I have read.

    Re: Rooting a phone

Here's a link that should have everything, or at least point you in the right direction.

    Thunderbolt Android Development - xda-developers

What it will do - gives you super user permissions to pretty much do whatever you want to the phone. Mostly, users do it to customize, and improve the phones capabilities.

Take off all that software that isn't needed but takes up space.
Flash a custom ROM to make it look like something else (ICS for instance)
Overclock and speed up the phones abilities so you get better performance

Simply Rooting your phone doesn't do any of this, just gives you access to do so.

    Re: Rooting a phone

I havent used it yet (my htc was already rooted before this came out) but htc now offers a way to unlock the bootloader of a lot of their phones.
