Twister Sister Summary - First win feels oh so good!

The drought is over! Wow. What a game. The 0 at the beginning of our Big 12 record is gone. Waa Hoo!! Cyclones win in convincing fashion 66-49. Nothing like a weekend sweep of the Red Raiders.

This one was a battle early as we worked the lane and Ttech did enough to keep it close for a while. Then something unusual happened. Something that I believe is a critical and, until today, missing ingredient to this team’s success showed up. Big C made her presence known in a very big way. It started in the first half with her first 3 that made it 9-5. She kept the hot hand and hit another on the next possession. Tech kept answering back with short shots in the paint, but weren’t matching 3’s with their 2’s. For quite some time ISU kept pumping up three’s and missing them and fortunately Tech was missing shots as well which kept this game close for much of the half. We even went through a period of fouls and turnovers and yet Tech was being held in check offensively. Over a five minute span they were held to 1 point. The defense was doing its job as Tech would go another 3 minutes picking up only 3 points. That’s 6 points (including the bucket ending the first scoring drought) in about 8 minutes of play. Unfortunately our ladies in red would have their droughts too. The offense was hit and miss and we went nearly the last 4 ½ minutes without a point. The sign of things to come was at the 4 second mark. Unexpectedly, Chas nailed a 3 pointer to give the Sisters a 29-23 lead at the break. There were lots of points left unscored as ISU had 7 turnovers in the first half and a few too many missed shots. Yet, this was the #17 team that we were holding in check!

The second half started off ugly for both squads. No one could hit much of anything as Brynn, Loz, Big C, and Prins all missed shots or turned the ball over. During the first five minutes of the half only Tech would pick up 3 points. Not pretty offensively for either side. And then it happened. An explosion. Possession after possession the Twister Sisters came down and scored. Pop, Moody and Loz hit back to back to back to extend the lead from 3 to 13 in a matter of just over a minute. Yes, it was an explosion! Tech would go nearly 6 minutes without scoring a point and TEN minutes with only one hoop. We’re talking about our ladies turning the screws on defense! During that time ISU would extend its lead to 17 and never look back.

One thing of beauty was Moody finding Big C open over and over again and Big C was making 3 point shots look easy. Tech had to deal with McGee yesterday. Today it was Big C hitting from downtown. We’ve missed this throughout the entire Big-12 season. Welcome back!

From there on out it was our ladies holding TTech at arms length as the lead would extend to 20 and hover in that range the rest of the way. The last few minutes weren’t anything to write home about as turnovers and missed shots reared their ugly head again. It just didn’t matter. The ladies did what we knew they were capable of all along…playing solid defense and doing enough scoring to make a difference.

Player of the game has to go to Big C. Pop re-emerged as well, but I also think having other scorers made a huge difference in that. Big C ended up with 19 points, 10 boards and a couple of nice steals. Her resurgence alone is worth POG honors.

Can’t forget Pop as she is the workhorse of this team. A not too shabby 10 points and 15 boards contributed mightily to this win. She is on her way to a 1st or 2nd team all Big 12 honor if she keeps this up.

Do I have any concerns after this one? A few. Moody is struggling from the field. Has been for a few games now. Yes, she is a freshman but sure hope that takes care of itself. We are depending heavily on the three ball. This has been the hallmark of Coach Fennelly’s teams, but we don’t have the consistent threat from three. Tonight it was Big C hitting five of seven. The rest of the team? Four of Eighteen. On any given night…

The good news is free throw shooting. Two straight games our ladies have been approaching the magic number I mentioned earlier in the season – 80%. Tonight the team shot 76%. That’s darn good. The Starters? 83%. That you have to love. Moody had a great assist to turnover ratio today as well. Obviously Big C being hot from three helped, but Moody found her and it worked. You go with the money!

Interesting stats of the day. In the pre-game on CF I mentioned TTech was hot on the offensive boards (almost 18 per game) and steals (almost 13 per game. They were way under on both (7 offensive boards and 9 steals). Credit our ladies and those rebounding machines – Pop and Big C – for that.

This is a feel good win. It may not be a signature win as Tech has now lost 4 straight, but it is a HUGE and much needed win for State. The schedule turns ugly again as the next two games are on the road at KSU and ATM. KSU was just humiliated at Baylor yesterday and is on a 2 game skid. Winning there is never easy but not impossible. ATM as always can be a scary experience. Since beating ISU badly in Ames, they’ve gone on to beat Mizzou and KU. I’m hoping we can at least come out of this road trip 1-1. After that the schedule becomes a little bit friendlier for our ladies.

Her shooting was off, but Moody came somewhat close to a triple-double: 9 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists. She had a really good game and will be extremely dangerous offensively when she figures out how to finish her drives.

Great point! Her free throw shooting was critical as a point guard.

Agree; she is coming up short on layups--hitting under or at the level of the rim instead of above it. At least that is how it appeared to me from where I sat. But otherwise, she had a very solid game. In fact, I thought all three of our main ball-handling guards, Moody, Chas, and Loz, played well. These three scored 29 pts altogether.

Brenda V and Cindy Stein were impressed w Moody. Liked that she only had 2 Tos in 36 min of play against intense on ball defense. Sad she missed a couple of those layups because they were sweet drives.

When some shots fall this is a really good team.

Was glad to see some smiles tonight on players faces.

If Pop doesn't get 1st team all big 12 there should be an investigation. I don't think I've seen a player before, now, or in the future who puts for the effort Pop does.

A few thoughts from the game
-Anna needs to realize she can dominate with her hight and ability she could take games over

-Good to see HC back to her old form

-Pop is fun to watch I hope her body holds together watching her I think tape is the only thing holding her knee together

-Moody is starting to learn the offense we finally scored some points, but there are still times all the girls look confused on offense

Overall good game we need to keep building on offense and this should help their confidence greatly.

Great win for the team! Plus it's nice to see more than one person knocking some shots down for a change.

They know there are a LOT of games left in the conference season and that there is plenty of time to make up some ground and get that NCAA berth. There just isn't a big margin for error now. It was nice to see smiles on their faces today, along with the win. It's been a while since we, as fans, have experienced them actually having fun on the court.

All people who make sweepingly generalized, stupid, uninformed comments are idiots.

Great job by the post players especially when you consider coach Easley wasn't at the game. Was he out recruiting or out sick does anyone know?

They said on the broadcast that he has a family member back home seriously ill.

EDIT: That is what I thought they said, but I could have it wrong.
