How many charges did ISU have today?

I know several of them where well deserved, especially from the guards, but it seemed like the minute one of the big guys tried to take it inside it was a charge.

Yeah it was pretty ridiculous how many we had in the last 10 minutes.

Re: How many charges did ISU have today?

Refs are calling charges like crazy all over the country this year. I think the problem isn't that they are calling charges when they should call it a blocking foul, the problem is they are calling charges when it should be a no call. We had a couple today when players were called for pushing off with their off hand while dribbling. This could be called every possession and is not an offensive foul unless they player really extends his arm. Too many time the refs are calling it when a player is just shielding the defender. Royce has also had several offensive fouls called on him like this when backing a defender down or doing a post move but his strength makes it look like he is shoving they defender when he's really not doing anything worse than smaller guys get away with.

That charge circle is horrible. They either need to move it out to where it is in the NBA or take it away altogether. These refs are giving the benefit of the doubt way too much to the flopper. I'm saying this about the game in general, not just our games.

It's almost like they think anything outside the circle is a charge. I'm not real sure why, but every time it seems like the refs have made a certain rule a focus for the season, the only thing that suffers is the entertainment value of the game. On the bright side, I'd much prefer something to be called consistently than to change the rules from game to game (or within a game, or on one side of the court).

Re: How many charges did ISU have today?

I agree with what others are saying here. I'm gonna go ahead and assume this is all coming from the rules committee and not really the refs fault since this has been pretty prevalent. I think its taking away from the integrity of the game--in that to play good defense it does take some talent, not just effort. The way some of these games are being called, its like any dude who falls over in the vicinity of the ballhandler is given a call. IMO, a defensive flopper who looks to initiate contact in order to draw a charge should NEVER get the call, much in the way that I don't believe an offensive player should ever get the call for pump faking, and then jumping into a vertically handed defensive player.(last part is hard to explain I hope that makes sense)

My main beef is real defensive talent is being less rewarded than just plain ******** defense, where guys are flopping to get calls....really lessens the game IMO.

Um, that IS an offensive foul. It should be called a hell of a lot more often. I can create a LOT of space without much extension if the guy is guarding tight and I go at him and he's back pedaling.

And the majority of the charges I've seen called this year have been (by the rule book) offensive fouls. Everything had been so grossly in favor of offensive basketball games and now they're finally getting it right. You can't go through the defender (which Royce tends to do) and you can't lead with the shoulder (which is finally getting called like it should). Now once they get the referees calling "body" fouls correctly it'll be golden. The defensive player who has established legal guarding position shouldn't be punished if they're straight up.

Charging calls are made way too often and often are the wrong call. Officials seem to get off on the charge call.

Re: How many charges did ISU have today?

Charging has become the most ridiculous call in basketball imo. Just because a guy gets his foot there first doesn't mean he has position, at least enough to warrant a charge.

Oh well, the game has changed, I'm amazed how much pushing and shoving are allowed now, as well as moving pics. I played a lot of years ago and never made it passed high school, but if you breathed on a guy who had the ball, it was usually a fowl. And chages, you had to be set and establish position to get a charge, not just put your foot there before the other guy.

    /old angry guy rant over.

The circle is now too close to the basket when the guy takes a charge and the player can almost dunk it. It needs a fix.

Re: How many charges did ISU have today?

There is no such rule you have to be set to take a charge

And just because your foot beats someone to a spot doesn't establish legal guarding position. Do calls get screwed up? Absolutely. However more often than not, the call is correct.

In my opinion, the charge circle is fine. The intention is basically to keep people from sliding under someone when they are coming down from jumping. It's serving it's purpose.
