    1st in the Nation

I haven't seen this anywhere else but ISU is first in the country in penalties at 3.17 per game. At least were producing a disciplined team. We are also 6th in Time of possession at 32:45 per game. I am gonna go with the killer is the TO margin with a rank of 104th. Yet that is still better then USC, interesting.

I figured I would find some positives that have been happening with the team so far.

We seem to be on offense more than 111 other teams.

Did you not read that we are 6th in time of possession?

I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone.

Whoops my bad. I guess that just means we let the other teams score too quickly.

Yeah, you combine the low number of penalties and the very high time of possession, you'd think this team would at least be .500.

Two things coaches harp on all the time and we're doing well with both.

Then, you look at the turnover column and everything makes sense.

Thanks. You've sealed our fate for double digit penalties per game the rest of the year.

Seriously though, I hope the fellas can find the end zone with a bit more regularity starting this Saturday. Time of possession is one of the most over-rated stats in football, it's what you do with it when you have it that counts.

    Re: 1st in the Nation

I must once again drop my "I know what's going on" façade and ask: what's the deal with turnover measurements? Is +3 good or bad? How do I read that?

As long as I'm asking dumb questions, I might as well ask for an explanation for the term "over-under".

    Thanks...

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.

+3 is good. That means we have 3 more turnovers then given to the other team(s).

Over-under is a bet based on what you think the total score of a game will be, including both team's scores.

    Re: 1st in the Nation

I actually just read some stuff on penalties and their effect on wins and losses that was kind of interesting.

According to this analysis having the least penalty yards actually has a slightly negative correlation to winning (which shouldn't be much surprise considering we were the least penalized Big 12 team last year also). Here is what they found:
    Rank Category Win %
    1. Yards Per Pass .785 (241-66)
    2. Total Offense .740 (231-81)
    3. 3rd Down Efficiency .709 (212-87)
    4.
    Turnover Margin .681 (156-73)
    5.
    Rush Offense .678 (213-101)
    6.
    First to Score .674 (213-103)
    7.
    Yards Per Carry .673 (206-100)
    8.
    Time of Possession .624 (179-108)
    9.
    Pass Offense .556 (173-138)
    10.
    Home Team .539 (126-108)
    11.
    Fewest Penalty Yards .405 (119-175)

Here and here they look at the fact that passing teams are much more highly penalized than rushing teams and what that might mean.

    Re: 1st in the Nation

Of the above, we are weak in 1,3,4. and 9. The deepwe pass, turnovers and the third down efficiency stands out. - areas we need to get better in. Funny how 4 of the most important categories are our weaker areas.
