Cyclone FB player rating review 08 class - long

In light of Ubben going back in time to look at past classes, I thought I would check out our 2008 class and see where they were at compared to their initial rating. I based this on achievement in a Cyclone Uni. I am not the most informed on some of the guys who didn't make it to campus, so you'll have to take some of this with a grain of salt. Feel free to discuss these!

I used rivals ratings and used the new player rating based on what rivals has out for their rating criteria which I linked:

    About Football Ratings

Here are the guys and their original ratings:
Yahoo Sports: Rivals.com 2008 Iowa St. Commitments

Kennard Banks - 3 stars: Kennard earned his 3 star rating in 2009 when he recorded 55 tackles with 1 INT, 1 forced fumble and 1 fumble recovered. He added in 18 total tackles in his first year on '08. Final rating 3*

Ter'Ran benton - 3 stars: Ter'Ran was a great Cyclone, sacrificing personal stats for team needs and he still put up great stats, with 189 total tackles, 3.5 sacks, 3 INTs and a slew of fumbles recovered and forced. He also added a blocked kick in 2010 for good measure. He will more than likely always be remembered by Cyclones faithful for the INT vs. Okie State in 2011 but did great things all 4 years. I was torn on him because I feel like he has NFL potential but was screwed a little by playing multiple positions, I go with my gut. Final rating:4*

Brayden Burris - 2 stars: It's hard for me to evaluate O lineman due to minimal stats but I know that Burris has put in serious time at RT for us and will continue to be a very nice book end on the right. Started 7 games this year and sat the others due to leg fracture. Final rating 3*

Carter Bykowski - 2 stars: Carter started 4 games and played in all game in 2011 helping out on the Oline due to injury. May compete for starting spot in '12. Final rating 3*

Jason Carlson - 2 stars: Stays 2 stars. No official stats.

Darius Darks - 3 stars: Man, ask me after the 2008 season and I would have told you 4* for sure, but over the course of his ISU career his production tapered off. He was a captain this past year and made nice plays for us in several games in '11 including a great TD catch against Kstate and a monster block to spring James White for the winning score against Iowa. With 126 career receptions, 1346 yards and 7 TD's. Final rating 3*

Ernest Ferguson - 2 stars: Looks to have never made the roster. demoted to 1*

Zach Guyer - 2 stars: Zach came on strong during his senior season, bringing a little consistency to a kicking game that has really been in trouble for the better part of a decade. He went 11-16 (69%) on field goals and led Clones in scoring with 62 points. Ultimately, Zach, what were you waiting for??? Final rating 2*

Kevin Hamlin - 2 stars: Made roster in 08, 09, 10. No field time to my knowledge. 2 stars.

Chase Harper - 2 stars: Never made roster. 1*

Adrin "Scott" Haughton - 2 stars: This is a tough one for me. By looking at statistics he looks to have played some special teams in his career in 08 and 09. I know there has been talk of Scott having a lot of potential on the O-line prior to getting in some trouble or having academic trouble. Didn't make impact on the team so I will keep him at 2*

Edit: Per some of my more knowledgeable brethren, Scotts contributions in '09 were very significant to success of the O-line and should merit him a 4* rating.

Leonard Johnson - 3 stars: Leonard is one of my favorite Cyclones over the years going from a prolific return man to a great shut down corner who epitomized Coach Rhoads' motto of "hitting em getting off the bus". He earned some serious credibility with scouts with his performance against Justin Blackmon this year in the Okie State game, showing us what he was capable of. Career stats: 247 tackles, 6 Ints and a mess of forced fumbles. Final rating: 4*

Sedrick Johnson - 4 stars: Oh, what could have been! Sedrick came in with a lot of hype and an interesting recruiting story having been committed to aTm. He showed some promise but had injury issues and left the team early after the 2010 season. Career stats: 57 receptions for 326 yards and 3 TDs. Final rating: 2* maybe a low 3*

Cleyon Laing - 2 stars: Cleyon has been a capable defensive reserve who should get serious minutes in the middle in 2012. His production hasn't wowed statistically but has provided much needed depth on the DL. Career stats: 29 tackles, 1.5 for loss and .5 sacks. Maybe a little high but, final rating 3*

Dustin Land - 2 stars: Never made roster. 1*

Judah Linder - 2 stars: Never made roster. 1*

Rosie Maggitt - 2 stars: Rosie got bit by the injury bug this season and was unable to play due to his knee exploding on him. He had put 2 decent seasons together and was starting to look like a solid rush end at the end of 2010. His career stats: 44 tackles, 3 for loss. Like Cleyon, I'm probably a little positive but a D starter is a 3* in my book.

Grant Mahoney - 2 stars: Grant started off at ISU with great numbers scoring 85 total points in '08 but then production tapered off each season. He continued to show great leg strength doing kick-offs throughout his career. He finished his Cyclone career with 210 total points, good for 7th all time, on 39-66 FGs (59%), but was not accurate in the final 2 seasons leading to getting benched for Guyer. Final rating 2*

Jake McD - 3 stars: Jake has one year remaining to do damage on the newly deep and improved Cyclone DL. He played very solid minutes clogging up the middle next to Rump. To date his career numbers are: 53 tackles, 7.5 for loss and 3 sacks. He will likely anchor the 2012 ISU DL Final rating 3*

Lonzie Range - 2 stars: Stays 2 stars. To my knowledge, never saw the field as Cyclone.

Rump - 2 stars: Rump is another Cyclones I was a big fan of. Many think his redshirt getting burned as a frosh by Chiz was a screw job and it probably was, but Rump did well anyway. Solid player anchoring the middle of the DL that made some nice strides in 2011 over the previous years. Career Stats: 91 tackles, 6 sacks. Final rating 3*

Jeremiah Schwartz - 2 stars: Jeremiah had one memorable game in 2009 against NE when we famously went to Memorial Stadium and beat the Huskers in a 9-7 barnburner. He ran for 274 yards in that, his only season participating with ISU. Final rating; 2*

Jerome Tiller - 3 stars: Jerome has had his ups and downs with ISU including the 2009 win at Nebraska and his much maligned academic ineligibility in 2011. His production has been up and down also. Jerome's legacy may be in flux as he is rumored to transition to WR. Career stats passing: 80/155 (51%) for 739 yards and 2 TDs. Final Rating: 3 *

Ethan Tuftee - 2 stars: Appeared in 5 games as a RSoph in 2010 and started all but one game in 2011 at LG. Will have continued success at the guard spot this year. Final rating 3*

Interesting. Surprising number of 2 stars who turned out pretty good.

Haughton was likely headed to the NFL with the way he was developing during the 2009 season as a starter at RT. If he could have kept his grades up he would have helped immensely in 2010.

I thought that Haughton was a four star talent. When he moved inside vs NU in 2009 to replace Lemaak (who was throwing up), he handled Suh better than anyone we had. Too bad he couldn't keep his grades in order.

Wow, what I take from that is how many swings-and-misses we had.

Re: Cyclone FB player rating review 08 class - long

Actually compared to some of Mac's classes the 2008 class is looking pretty good as far as "swings and misses" go. I can't remember which class it was for sure but I remember RJ Sumrall's class only had like 4 of the original committs make it to their senior year. It seems like CPR's guys are sticking together longer. We will see how his first class ends up over the next 2 years. With out looking that class included; Knott, Klein, Reeves, Washington, Woods, Broomfeld, Scott, Lichtenberg, White, Lenz, Reynolds, and Woody. I'm sure I am forgetting a few but that is a pretty solid group for an initial recruiting class.

Talent wise he could have been a 5 star. He played plenty

Jake McD - 3 stars: Jake has one year remaining to do damage on the newly deep and improved Cyclone DL. He played very solid minutes clogging up the middle next to Rump. To date his career numbers are: 53 tackles, 7.5 for loss and 3 sacks. He will likely anchor the 2012 ISU DL Final rating 3* Could, and I know it's a stretch but could play himself into 4 star status with big final year. I thought he was great this year

Lonzie Range - 2 stars: Stays 2 stars. To my knowledge, never saw the field as Cyclone. Never seemed to recover from ACL injuries

Rump - 2 stars: Rump is another Cyclones I was a big fan of. Many think his redshirt getting burned as a frosh by Chiz was a screw job and it probably was, but Rump did well anyway. Really underselling Haughton

Thanks for the additions, I wasn't sure of what he had done and didn't go through the participation lists and depth charts for '09. I had only recalled hearing "the legend of Scott Haughton" on here and CR.

Good work on this. You are pretty spot on on most of these IMO. What is encouraging is how much better some of the new classes look.

Re: Cyclone FB player rating review 08 class - long

Not a bad analysis--but I'm not sure I would have given the guys with a season still left a "final" grade. And as others have said, Haughton started for a year and a half, and doubtless would have been a star, had he kept his grades in order.
