My observations at the OSU game

I only get to one or two games a year. Last night was the first time I had been to a game since the first game of last season.

The first thing I noticed was during the player introductions. During the intro for OSU they kept the music playing over the PA system. Kinda drowns out the whole "5 claps" thing, which I always thought was kinda cool. I always thought it came off as "We're only clapping for you out of courtesy". With the music going it just doesn't seem the same.

I got tickets in one of the "donation required" areas through ticket exchange, so I thought I would be sitting among some "actual" fans. However, most of what I heard were negative comments. "Why do they let him shoot?", "When are you gonna start guarding that guy?", "Stop Fouling!", "Try making a free throw!". I realize they didn't play their best game last night, but there were some nice plays made and I never once heard a "Nice pass", or "Good defense", or anything from these guys. One guy threw his hat on the floor at one point. Just makes me wonder what they expect.

5 Claps should never be drowned out by music. It's a tradition. Of course it's not a forced tradition so we will probably get rid of it eventually. We like forced traditions for some reason.

Just frustrated fans. Basketball is a crazy sport. You can be down in the dumps one minutes, then on cloud 9 the next. It's a good thing some fans are showing emotion. better than some idiot sitting there in silence.

IMO yes. At least the person is showing he cares and won't accept losing.

Re: My observations at the OSU game

I think a lot of people expected a blow out and didn't get it.

I watched it in a crowded bar while playing trivia, so I didn't get to watch the whole game closely. I thought overall that ISU looked pretty good and OSU made a ton of tough shots. Royce's 2nd foul 30ft away from the basket was a bit of a boneheaded play, but other than that it seemed like good effort and some guys were a bit off.

I have no problem with commenting on players mistakes. I do it too when a player takes a bad shot or commits a stupid foul or whatever, but I also comment when they make GOOD plays. Something that these fans never (and I mean NEVER) did.

Re: My observations at the OSU game

I'm probably guilty of being overly negative during a game. Basketball is a frustrating sport and can be nitpicked from several angles. It is fast-paced and there are a lot of plays. As fans, we expect every shot to go in, every possession to produce a good shot, every shooter covered, every loose ball corralled, etc. I think it is just the nature of the game especially when you are playing a team you expect to beat.

Re: My observations at the OSU game

My experience is that the further you get down into the higher money donation areas, the more critical people are. They have a lot invested and the games are more than just a "fun time" for them. You see of the "I'm just taking my family out for a good time" people in the $99 seats.

Re: My observations at the OSU game

Im glad the people are going to every game so the bills can be paid. It lets you go to 1 or 2 game a year so you can complain about them. I would assume they are donating also. At this rate it would be best that you just stay home.

This. And I'll freely admit that I thought the game was over after we went down 6 and turned over that inbound pass (after a timeout no less). Glad I was wrong.

That was his first, but your point stands. His 2nd was a pretty questionable charge. If he finds a way to stay on the floor for more than 7 minutes of the first half last night, I think we stretch out the lead and who knows what happens from there. I have no problem with hustle fouls, but I don't know what he was doing hedging out that far. doing at the top of the key is one thing, but driving the guy all the way to the bench will get you a foul every time. He's still learning.

Re: My observations at the OSU game

Watching on TV the crowd just sits on their hands until the last two minutes then gets up and encourages the team. They will cheer hustle plays, but I get the impression that this is just not a popular team with the fans. Fred even gets criticized from a lot of fans. If you cannot get behind the Mayor, who are you going to get behind?

We are 3-2 in Big 12 play and are way ahead of where we were last year or two years ago. The effort is getting better, especially on the defensive end.

Hats off to the season ticket holders that stuck with a program through lean years, but let's not punish this year's team for that. ISU fans are loyal, now let's be loyal and enjoy it.
