    Scholarships (non ISU athletic related)

During my college career I have been lucky enough to be selected by two different committees for two different scholarships. Without the financial help form those scholarship I would have more college dept than what I have already taken on which means I would have probably had to get private student loans. I just want to pass on the scholarships information to anyone on this board who needs financial help to pay for college.

The first scholarship I received was the Roy J. Caver Scholarship. In order to be eligible for this scholarship you must meet the following criteria:
    1. You must be a sophomore in one of Iowa's public Universities or private college. Or you must be a sophomore currently attending a community college in Iowa, and then transferring to state college or universities.
    2. Must be a full-time student
    3. Must be a USA citizen and state of Iowa resident
    4. Must come from an unusual social and/or barriers to attending college full time
    5. Must have a GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale

The Carver scholarship requires a personal essay, two references, and your FAFSA info to be completed by March 1. The deadline for this scholarship is April 1.

The second scholarship that I received was the LIFE Lessons Scholarship. This one is more of a national scholarship, and therefore harder to get. To be eligible for this one scholarship you need to meet the following criteria:
    1. Must be a USA resident and a legal resident of the 50 states.
    2. Between the age 17-24
    3. Enrolled or accepted to college, university, or trade school in one of the 50 states.
    4. Must have experienced a death of a parent.

To apply for this scholarship and individual must write a 500 word essay or produce 3 minute video on the struggles of living without a parent. There hasn't been an official deadline set for this scholarship yet, but it will probably be sometime in March.

If you are or know somebody you know fits the following criteria for any of the scholarships , I strongly encourage you or them to apply. Especially for the Caver Scholarship since it is awarded to Iowans, and the scholarship is worth $5,200 a year if you to one of the universities or $7,600 a year if you go one of the private colleges. The LIFE Lesson scholarship is a little harder to get but grand prize is $10,000, but they do award smaller scholarships. Just thought I would let some of you know, since I know a lot of students stop looking for scholarships once they get into college.

Thank you, but they kind of came at a cost or else I wouldn't be eligible.

Why do scholarships require essays? (Kind of being sarcastic but not really.)

to make you put some effort into getting free money. It's really amazing how often people overlook scholarships. If you can write a good essay, a lot of scholarships are really easy to get. Especially the $500 ones.

For all high schoolers out there - TAKE THE PSAT. If you score well enough, you can qualify for National Merit scholarship which is 8 semesters of all tuition paid by Iowa State.
