Twister Sister Summary - ladies fall again in heart breaker

The game started exactly like we didn't want it to...two missed shots and two turnovers as well as no defensive presence allowing UT to jump out to a quick 7-0 lead. The sisters started to settle down a bit and the defense showed up as the ladies were in the zone to try and give the shooters a problem. The big problem was the continued turnovers and poor shooting starting off 1-6. The longhornettes would extend the lead to 10-4 as the ladies just weren't doing a good job on UTs guards defensively. Two quick baskets including a needed bucket by Big C and a nice steal and layin by Moody to pull ISU within 2. The ladie had the chance to tie it or take the lead, but as is usual with this team they had a turnover...an over and back...that led to another UT bucket. Can't imagine how frustrating this has to be for the coaching staff as our ladies just don't seem to take good care of the ball. The key here was that the ladies kept battling. When UT had to set up their offense ISU was doing a good job of stopping them and rebounding.

Loz and Brynn would hit 3 pointers...beautiful shots to give the sisters their first lead at 14-12. It would continue to be a back and forth game with turnovers haunting both squads. Our offense continued to be a bit offensive as it ran with spits, spurts, and bumps. But, the points were coming from a variety of sources so that was good. What was nice to see was the reemergence of Big C as she picked up some nice points in the first half. She was much more active on the offensive end than I've seen in a while. Moved well and made her offensive game happen.

Neither of the teams seemed to be able to separate themselves as missed shots or turnovers would continue to bite both teams. ISU would have a 4 point lead and then it was tied up and back and forth it went.

Comment...these officials were as lost and lousy as all the others I've seen this year. Some really bad calls. Guess that is the rule of the conference this year. Great example was when UT was called for a charge, the officials conferred and then called it a blocking foul and then had to go to the monitor to call it a shooting foul. Wow.

This back and forth half finally ended with UT taking a 1 point lead into the half 26-25.

The second half would start off fast for the sisters. A flurry of blocked shots and three short shots by our ladies would give the sisters a 5 point lead. This was quickly countered as Fussell hit consecutive 3's. How in the world we don't cover the ONE girl who was scoring for UT I don't know. Suspect that was part of the message during the next timeout from coach Fen.

This half would continue to be much like the first with ISU holding a small lead in a very tentative manner for quite some time. One of the biggest things was UTs Gayle (their post) going to the bench early with four fouls. UT would continue to bomb from outside whenever possible. ISU would take their share too, but man we were ice cold. The one thing about ISU is that they will keep trying. 12% from outside midway through the half just won't cut it.

Frustrating is watching our 6' 7" post getting a shot blocked from behind. Wow. UT was staying in this game doing what they are horrible at - shooting the long ball. It was Fussell and others got in on the act to allow UT to edge out in front again. They were shooting 25% as a team in Big 12 play and were shooting over 40% tonight.

The Cyclones would answer back with two big threes of their own by Moody and Big C to retake the lead. Again though, just as our offense appeared the defense would disappear allowing UT to hang around.

Suddenly a 5 point lead by the Sisters would disappear with three consecutive turnovers that all led to UT points. We were rescued from a fourth straight turnover on a clock violation by a late foul in UT. Prins would cash in the FTs.

The ladies just really struggled down the stretch. They might get a score and the defense would let them down. They would get a defensive stop and the offense would break down. UT did just enough to hold them at bay. What was worse was the officials found their whistles and UT was benefiting. With about 5 left both teams were in the bonus and the game was tied. When the ladies played good D it seemed they didn't get the rebound. Even worse Pop picked up her 4th foul with just over 3 to play on a horrible call by the officials. Man, does it seem like the basketball gods are just not smiling on our sisters right now. Pop had to be frustrated as she appeared to be having a horrible night from the field. What the stat line doesn't show was the 9 blocked shots by UT. Many of those were on Pop.

As the game wound down it was fouls and turnovers on ISU that just hurt us the most. Pressure defense by UT really caused us fits. It was just enough to allow UT to work the clock and score just enough to keep us at arms length.

This game came down to three things. We couldn't handle the pressure defense and turned it over repeatedly late in the game. Pop couldn't score. When your leading scorer is held to 1-11 shooting its not a good night. Finally, fouls late put Texas on the line and they cashed just enough in to count.

This game is another that should have been in the win column . We just seem to be dysfunctional enough to keep putting ourselves in bad positions over and over again. In the Big 12 you can't help the other team out. Make 'em earn it girls!

They would keep battling and with 17 to go down by two, Pop would have a 1-1 to tie. The first...good. The second....good! Tie game with 17 seconds left. How many nail biters would this team endure? Unfortunately UT would hit a running layin to score with .5 seconds left. Wow...can we say snake bitten? Final score...Texas 62, ISU 60. The ladies drop to 0-5 in the conference for the first time ever. Good effort, but still too many mistakes.

Best stat of the game? The ladies went 17-19 from the line. Wow.

From the field our posts were 4-19. That won't cut it. Moody did some good things scoring, but a 4:5 assist to turnover ratio won't cut it. Three point shooting was horrible at 26%. That was the worst of it. But they battled and battled. Unfortunately, this team has zero margin of error, and this was too much.

Wow...am just heartbroken for these kids. Uncharted territory. Sure was good to hear them in the post game and hear them talk about what they need to do. Get Tech!

They really need to get a win under their belt to build some confidence. Right now, that ability (confidence) in the clutch just is not there. That's why all the heart breakers in games where the game plan was solid and they just couldn't finish.

Re: Twister Sister Summary - ladies fall again in heart breaker

Thank you acoustimac for the summary.

A heartbreaker but close losses are always better to read about than losses by tons of points. The ISU women will turn it around and this team remains one that has GREAT potential. Once they get more jelled as a team things will go more smoothly, some seasons that jelling just takes a little longer.

I hope a big crowd comes out on Sunday to watch the women beat Tech.
