New Iowa HS Football Districts Announced

The Iowa High School Athletic Association this morning revealed its Class 4-A divisional assignments as the state revamps classifications.

In 4-A, perennial CIML powers Valley, Ankeny, Southeast Polk and Dowling Catholic were split into different divisions under the new playoff qualification system in western Iowa.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association aimed to divide the 23 teams currently playing 4-A football on that side of the state, along with Ankeny Centennial, which opens in 2013, into four competitively balanced divisions.
Update: New football districts for ex-CIML teams -- all classes | The Des Moines Register | DesMoinesRegister.com

I'm surprised there hasn't been more discussion on this topic. This is horrible for Central Iowa HS sports, IMO. I'm not sure how they could possibly have made crappier divisions.

The thing I am most surprised about is seeing Iowa City Regina drop to 1A after winning back to back titles and 28 straight games at 2A. What a joke!

I'm more surprised how only half of 4A is in a district while the other half is still in conferences.

Wow, it looks like geography mattered about as much as in the collegiate conferences.

I'm glad that Eastern Iowa is keeping conferences. There tends to be more balance and teams moving up and down on this side of the state and it would be weird to not see the MVC every year.

I think it's weird to lose any conferences, but you're right. The MVC being gone would be really weird.

Re: New Iowa HS Football Districts Announced

Looks like it only really messed up geography for 4A, all the smaller districts work out pretty well.

Also, on a somewhat related note, West Marshall made the cover picture for the story. Good work Trojans!

Dumb question, but how does a team qualify for state now?

Looks like Ames will crush their division. As a Ames High alum, that makes me smile.

Unless you play in the MAC, where it's pretty much Bettendorf, Assumption, and North Scott every single year...

For 4A? I'm guessing it would be like the other classes with divisions now. Top (what, 2?) western schools in each division get in. For the eastern schools, I would guess that it's the same ol' same ol'.

Be one of the top 32 schools out of 47 (yeah, yeah, it's a "play-in" round. whatever.). Ironically, Davenport North, the school I graduated from, still can't qualify under such a format...

I wonder if the MVC being as fluid as it is kept the conferences together over here.
