    Defensive Improvement

Ran some interesting numbers on just how well our defense has been in conference play and especially since the first 10 games of the season and put it up on my site...

    www.encyclonepedia.com

Basically, ISU is allowing the 4th fewest points per possession in the B12 after having played the 1st, 3rd, and 5th best offensive teams in pts/poss for the entire season in the B12 (ISU is 4th in scoring as well).

    Re: Defensive Improvement

This is an interesting team. I'm excited about the talent that we clearly have. I thought top to bottom we had more talent than Kansas. That's just my opinion. There are frustrating moments that I have to check myself and remember how different the team looks from teams of recent memory. They are meshing. We have legit Big 12 talent deep into the bench for the first time in years. Kudos to Fred and staff. I think that Royce is a Top 5 NBA pick and his talent at times makes Allen and others seem less that what they are. I'm excited for the remainder of the season. I think we get into the NCAA tourney. On that note, I would not what to play us.

Yeah, scares me when I see Railey on the floor. If he starts getting major minutes, we are in trouble. Granted he should only be on the floor if Booker, Ejim & White are in foul trouble. Which when we play Baylor, will probably happen. To match up with them, we will probably have to play White, Booker, Ejim, Babb, and a combination of Scotty, Allen and McGee all game.

Yeah. When I was talking about deep into the bench I did not mean Railey. But he'll get minutes due to size. His defense wasn't bad. Eye-opening drop off though.

I suppose Railey has some gaps in his game, and doesn't provide significant time off the bench.

But we forget, at many points during the past few years, he would have been a 30-plus-minutes starter.

One thing I noticed about Railey in the KU game was that he was the first guy down the floor a few times, which is good. He appears to work hard when he's out there.

    Re: Defensive Improvement

I have been very impressed with the improvement of this team in the last 4 games. Fred has certainly been identifying areas for improvement and it shows that they have been working on these during practice.

I'm not going to lie.... there were times during the OOC that I was really worried that Fred was in over his head, or that these transfers just didn't care or whatever it was it seemed like there were some big issues.

But in the past couple of weeks, it's apparent that Fred knows what he's doing and will get the job done. The players are buying into what he's teaching because you can see their improvement.

Royce White is a completely different player then he was 2 months ago.

Ejim is settling down. Babb's D is killer and when he's hot from outside, he's our second best player.

Booker looks like he's finding his stride. Scotty looks much more like his old self. Allen is an improvement at PG, but still takes some questionable shots.

IMO, Railey isn't as bad as people think....especially for a 4th post player behind White, Booker, and Gibson. I actually think his defense could be quite good. Keep in mind he is a 6'11" sophomore. A lot of times tall guys like him take more time to develop. I think he could be a big asset down the road for us.

That chart points to us being better than I thought during the OOC schedule as well.

    Re: Defensive Improvement

It really improved over the last 3 non conference games. Through the first 10 games in the non-con I think it was righat around 1 pt per poss.

I think he has a knack for getting under the skin of opposing players and that can be a useful thing. The Kansas game wasn't the first time I've seen him and an opposing player pulled aside and warned by a ref to tone it down. If he can cut down on the silly fouls and get more "quality" fouls I think he can be a nice bench player.

    Re: Defensive Improvement

I thought this team was selfish, lazy, egotistical, and took no pride in playing for ISU? I don't understand your argument.
