Mid year take on the transfers

    Royce White

Better than I expected and I was expecting a lot. He's really good and if playing here next year will have us in the top 25 starting the season.

    Anthony Booker

Better than I expected and I wasn't expecting near as much as with Royce. Maybe defensive issues at times (same with Royce) but all-in-all a great addition.

    Chris Allen, Chris Babb

I put them together because they are exactly what I expected.

+ defenders who go through shooting/shot selection issues. If their shooting comes on the remainder of the season, we're in business.

The transfer route was the way to go.

I agree that the transfer route totally paid off. It's way beyond rational expectations to have a team competing well with the best of the conference 1 1/2 years into a total program rebuild.

Very small disagreement but Chris Allen is not a + defender.

Booker's three point shot has shocked me. I hear it has shocked all of the Salukis out there as well.

Re: Mid year take on the transfers

    My take:

Royce-he is really coming into his own the last few weeks. He looks like he is 28, so I think we sometimes assume he should play like that. But he is not....he is 20 or 21 and playing his first college basketball. He's had to learn how to play at this level. I'm especially happy that he seems to be taking a leadership role.

Chris Allen-I think he has been mostly fine. We look better with him in their at the point then we do without him. But he hasn't been as good as I thought he would be. It's too bad because he was supposedly lighting it up in practice. Sometimes I wonder if he is pressing himself too hard. Hopefully, he can relax a bit in the next month.

Chris Babb-His defense has been great and you can tell he is the type of kid who will do whatever the coaches need him to do. He's a great shooter, but it appears that he will always be streaky.

Booker-I had low expectations for him, but I have enjoyed watching him play. The 3's have been nice, but I don't expect them to keep going down. He could be a force down low if he wanted to be. But overall, I think he has improved a lot in the last couple of months. He's probably been the player that Hoiberg has been the hardest on (maybe he is the one that they wanted to run off??) and I am not sure why, but I think he could have a solid senior season. I'm glad he has seemed to embrace is off the bench role.

I think it has shocked Hoiberg as well. I've gotten used to Hoiberg being extremely positive about players shooting the ball. And while he has been supportive of Book shooting it, you can tell that he isn't extremely crazy about Booker and the 3.

Allen and Babb take terrible shots at times where its more about the team winning and less about them finding their shot.

At least 5 times, Allen gave KU an extra 30 seconds by taking a bad shot to start out the possession.

Allen has been a great addition. Some people don't get that without him we lose to KU big.

Well he said from the very beginning that Booker's threes weren't a fluke. He shoots them very well in practice and he has the green light.

He has a very nice shot. Hopefully teams keep leaving him really open.

This. I do think Allen is improving, he just seems to still be caught up in the moment and doesnt think. Trying to play catch up when patience would put them back in it. Im not sold on him being selfish. I just think hes trying to get us in it without thinking.

I've heard this too. But I will agree with a poster above that Freddy appears to be the "hardest" on Booker, giving him very little benefit of the doubt. Not sure why that is because in all the interviews Book seems to have a great attitude.

I can't believe I'm saying this but I was expecting Anthony to get MORE shots based on how smooth/sweet his stroke looked in capital city league. He's got great arch and great form. It really is buttery smooth for a guy his size. I think you gotta start getting him at least 5 looks from 3 a game. If he starts missing all 5, back off. But if he's making 2-3, or hell 4+, that is HUGE off the bench.

He really is a tremendous athlete too, I hope he continues to battle hard on D and work on his inside game offensively. I think he's got some "game" downlow but he seems reluctant to show it (at times).

I'm a big Anthony Booker fan and I think he needs a few more minutes.

Re: Mid year take on the transfers

I think Allen is going to be just fine and will in time be our go to guy down the stretch. I think Scottie played the point to open the season mainly because of Allen's injury now he's adjusting to taking over a position that isn't his natural. CW said during the summer that Allen is our best player and I find it hard to swallow that isn't going to be a major factor down the stretch.

As for the forgotten transfer, I love our JUCOs energy and think he could average 15 a game next year when he's getting 25-30 minutes

Re: Mid year take on the transfers

To the poster who said they wouldn't expect Book to keep hitting them at a high level, I say why not? It is not like he has poor shot selection. He has probably shown the best shot selection of any of our shooters. If he continues to only take the wide open looks, I'm confident he will continue to knock them down. Maybe not at an 80% clip like I think he is now, but he can still hit over 50%, I think.

As far as his down low game, we seem to abandon it when Royce isn't in the game. If White is in, we will absolutely try to get him the ball. But if he's out and its either Booker or Gibson, it seems like we play around the perimeter a ton and rely on the drives. So while I expected more down low from Booker (especially with his body size) I think its more a product of our system than him not playing well. Just my 2 cents anyway.
