Re: Messingham move a no-brainer for Rhoads

If it was that clear and forgone, I kind of would anticipated it to be announced sooner. I suppose CPR thought it may undermine Herman even more in bowl prep. Hindsight suggests getting a head start for next year under Mess would have been better.

Sounds like he's taking a page from the Leach book. Less plays, simpler reads, more precision/reps. I don't know if we'll see a lot of formations for the same plays (Leach's main way of confusing defenses), but I do agree that as much as I love the idea of having a million plays for every situation, its tough to find players who are going to going to competently execute that many damn plays.

I like the idea and I hope it is comparable to Leach's multiple formations for the same plays. Why have 1000 plays that you're alright at when you can have 100 plays that you're great at? (arbitrary numbers, obviously)

I'll be hopeful if it means several diverse plays out of a formation.

Re: Messingham move a no-brainer for Rhoads

Less plays certainly plays to the advantage of young guys, new QBs, and anyone that is inexperienced. I imagine they will be able to complex things a little by the time our young QBs are older.

I have been warming up to this hire... I think it was the right move.
Although, the #1 reason I think our offense has a chance to improve from this past year to next year: our players will be better. We don't lose a whole lot on offense.

Exactly. And our QBs had zero experience prior to splitting last season. Both have shown the ability to be effective leaders of our offense and be exciting play makers.

Re: Messingham move a no-brainer for Rhoads

During the season we always discussed the fact that we did not do any one thing very well.
I think Rhoads is alluding to that exact fact here.

“Our game day package has been large. I think that sometimes as a play caller you can be too smart for your own good,” said Rhoads. If you can do less better, you’re a better football team and I think that is what we will work at doing.”

This was also true from CPR year 1 to CPR year 2, and the offense arguably got worse. I'm hoping the change at OC will prevent this from happening again.

I think that quote read a little bit like a shot at Herman, and it certainly echoes some criticisms I have read on this board about Herman over the last couple years.

I also felt it was a little bit of coach speak that CPR expected Herman to rise to bigger and better opportunities and leave the program. I'm sure that is your hope when you hire him on to the staff, but at the point we were at this season I certainly wouldn't have expected him to be going anywhere. We have been at the bottom of the league in offense for all 3 years under Herman, and we appear to be heading into year 4 with a bit of a QB controversy. That certainly doesn't scream upwardly mobile to me. But of course what do I know, 5-19 at ISU will land you the head coaching job at Auburn these days.

Overall, I found CPRs comments to be surprisingly critical of the job Herman has done here to date, and as a fan who has been critical of that job as well it was nice to see CPR acknowledge that.

Sounds like CPR had an idea about the direction he wanted to offense to go regardless of who the OC was. I'm in favor of the offense going the direction he mentioned in the article.

CW, do you not have any better pictures of Messingham to use for these articles?

I think I said in the Messingham hires as OC thread that Herman outsmarted himself all too often.

I think it is a good idea to get back to basics a bit. Use the same playbook but focus on what you can execute well. Have enough to tackle whatever you need to, but not so much that it is daunting.

I think Herman expected a bit too much out of his QBs at times and it hurt their execution in gameday situations.
