    Honeymoon - Puerto Rico

My better half and I will be going to Puerto Rico for our honeymoon this summer. We will be staying near San Juan, and I was curious how many CF'ers have been there. Any advice on what to see/do/eat/stay away from or just general reminiscing would be greatly appreciated.

If you need us to tell you what to "do" on your honeymoon, I don't think I can help you.

I meant the 4 hours I spend outside of my hotel room.

    Re: Honeymoon - Puerto Rico

Visited San Juan last February. Stayed at the Intercontinental Hotel in Isla Verde. It was spectacular. Awesome pools with bar service as well as another bar on the beach. Night life in old San Juan is great, especially if you like live salsa music and Cuba libres. One of the only notable specialty foods there was the mofongo, which is basically a fried cake of plantains and usually pork covered with more meat/seafood (usually of your choice).

Schedule a half day for hiking around El Yunque if you're into that kind of thing. Try and go on a clear day so that you can get good views of the island from the top. Otherwise you will be in the clouds.

The Bacardi Distillery is not far from San Juan (15 mins max) and the tour is free. You get 2 free rum cocktails at the end. Definitely worth it. If you want to bring back some really good Puerto Rican rum that is almost impossible to find here, grab a few bottles of this: Barrilito - Ron del Barrilito Three Star - Rum Review - Ministry of Rum

It is about $20 at any local grocery store and is unbelievably good.

All these and if you can take a day or two to the small islands, culebra and another one, they are suppose to have fantastic beaches. You have to take a ferry or small plane to get there. If there is a crescent moon the bio bays are cool.

These are just to the east of Puerto Rico. I didn't get to go due to limited time while attending a conference but they were highly recommended. Other people went by ferry and really enjoyed it.

You're thinking of Vieques. My wife and I spent a week there, and loved every second of it. Not too touristy, and it's not hard to find a secluded stretch of beach for sunbathing and...other stuff.

    Re: Honeymoon - Puerto Rico

Is Puerto Rico a good spot to visit if you have children around 10yrs old? Enough to keep them busy and enjoying a vacation or is it better for adults only?

The resort I stayed at had a lot of kids. Volleyball nets, small pools, protected beach, and the whole complex was fenced (ie. no random people on the beach). Very family friendly destination IMO.

We went past their private island and beach on our snorkeling trip. It looked legit! Oh, a tram (gondola-like) up and down from the main resort looked sweet too.
