Hilton to be managed by ISU

    http://www.desmoinesregister.com/app...33/1003/SPORTS

This is big news for those of you interested in the finances of our athletic department. It was one of the things Pollard brought up as part of the facilities initiatives, and should improve cash flow.

Re: Hilton to be managed by ISU

Yeah it sure made a lot of sense that we owned the property, but paid someone else to manage it, paid them to use what we own, and didn't receive all the advertising revenue or concession stand revenue.

Who in their right mind decided to make it this way anyways???

It's about time that we took claim to the ISC again.

It was announced that they were trying to get control of Hilton back but were still in negotiations.

As for who decided it would be a good idea in the first place.....it had to have happened sometime in the Gene Smith era, or maybe even before.

It isn't, and never was owned by ISU. The fund raising drive was organized by James Hilton, then the president, but no state funds were used in the building of any of the ISC. That's why it was made that way.

Well, the DMR did some poor reporting. In the article it states that the ISC is owned by ISU.

If Pollard thinks this is a good thing for us, then I have no doubt that this will help with the finances of our department. I want every dollar made from that facility going right back to our athletic department, not to some east coast management firm.

Well, to my knowledge, ISU has to pay the ISC for all uses of its facilities, whether it be athletics or academics. For instance, ISU band concerts are rarely inside CY Stephens because it costs the department so much money. The ISU Foundation was established to build it, so they might own it, but I don't believe the University proper actually does.

This will help the athletic department but if Geoffroy had done this 5 years ago ISU would still have baseball. He refused to give athletics the concessions or waive the rent and ISU lost the baseball program. Let's hope the funds are used to bring baseball back and not for facilities which should be fund raised for.

ISU owns Hilton, bonds were used to pay for the construction.

How much of an increase in revenue does the athletic department stand to make by this move?

I not sure, but wont we now have to pay to staff those events and utilties etc....so its not like we will make out like Drug dealers to my knowledge, but from what I have heard from one of the coaches at a tailgate is that they will be finally be able to practice and use Hilton without paying or having to work with a 3rd party etc...

Flag Guy is going to be ecstatic. There shouldn't be any more threats to remove him or his successor from the building for doing what he does.

    Long live tradition.

It may be more of a "decrease in losses" than an "increase in revenue" to start. The AD will get to keep all the $$$$ that went toward renting Hilton for practices and games. It will mean a lot fewer practices in Forker and State Gym, so less time wasted getting people to somewhere on campus.

You don't even want to know how much it costs the AD to have Hilton staff install/remove the big curtain for volleyball and wrestling, per season.

For revenues, there is the other 50% of the ad revenue. Plus, a likely increase in concession revenue (from 0%).

It will be nice to streamline everything if nothing else. Might make scheduling for BB easier as well.

One thing about it, I highly doubt they would spend a million dollars managing it like SMG does, and even if they did they still would get increased advertising revenue and the concessions. I mean that would have to add up to about 7 figures for the AD wouldn't it?
