    RW's future in the NBA

Many more games like today's, and Royce could end up a lock 1st round pick. I'd hate to have him for just one year, but hopefully he'll choose to stay longer.

I'm intrigued by how he'll transition to the NBA. At 6' 7", he'll have a difficult time playing down low. Charles Barkley is one the few who's ever been able to do so. Royce doesn't have the perimeter game to excel from the outside. I'm afraid he might be a "tweener" by NBA standards. Perhaps that means he'll stay at ISU longer to learn from the Mayor how to make it in the NBA.

I don't see him leaving after this year. He has plenty to work on before he is NBA talent level. He has the body and the talent to be very good but he has plenty of NBA necessary skills to work on before he will move on.

Re: RW's future in the NBA

He does need more offensive polish, and to learn the defensive end better. He's obviously the most talented player on the court at any given time, and I think between that and his strength, he can dominate at this level, but needs a bit more seasoning before he goes pro.

The part that scares me is that the NBA drafts on potential, and he has it.

Re: RW's future in the NBA

He has a long way to go. He shined against a brutally sub-average team today. He also missed a few bunnies that a first round pick wouldn't. Even if the NBA is something he wants to pursue, he better play a couple more years here. At this point, he would fill a spot on a roster, but he would by no means be a "force." I will say that he has a ton of potential and could do some special things here before he is gone.

    Enjoy.

Love Royce, he can be a great college player, as demo'd today.

I think Fred will give him an honest judgment after the year is over on what his chances are. But as of now, IMO Royce needs another year.

And of course I'm biased, I want him here --- ISU could be crazy good with him next year.

Royce will be back next year even if he blows up. He will play two for sure. He's been telling incoming recruits as much as well.

Re: RW's future in the NBA

I honestly don't think he's ready yet, but I do think after a second year here he could be if he improves in the right areas (mid range game, free throws, one on one defense).

Outside of ISU I watch way more NBA than college, he has the talent but it's still pretty raw in terms of the next level. Fizer was more raw as a freshman and maybe even sophomore and played himself up to a #3 pick by staying, #3 pick money is set for life if you don't pi$$ it away.

The key to a lasting career for any 3, 4, or 5 in the NBA is being able to play decent man defense and knocking down a mid range jumper. You can play for years and years off the bench if you have that, if you don't even if you're very athletic you might end up out of the league in a few short years. The mid range shooting in the NBA is so much better than college.

Re: RW's future in the NBA

I don't think it's so much a question of whether he's ready. I think it's more a question of where he will fit in. As I said at the top of the thread, he doesn't have the height or the skill set to make a living down low and he doesn't have the perimeter game to make a living in the backcourt. I think he'll need a few years to find his niche, and I can't think of a better person to tutor him along than his current coach.

I cant imagine spending that high of draft pick on someone who doesn't bring that much to the NBA game offensively for his size.

Re: RW's future in the NBA

I don't think he's ready either, but I seem to remember people saying similar things about a former player of ours; then he dropped 42 points on Kansas and things changed. I've got to think his play today opened some eyes, and I agree with the OP that if he has a few more games like that, things could start to change really fast. I hope he does just well enough for us to win for the rest of this season.

Re: RW's future in the NBA

He's got a kid. If he projects as a sure pick at the end of the season he'd be stupid not to go.

I assume that Royce leaving is what Fred is planning with the problem of the extra scholarship player for next year.
