For crying out loud.....increasing the gas tax won't stop demand, it'll just take more money out of taxpayer pockets that are already getting hit hard.

The sad thing is, we have no guarantee that the money from those taxes will actually go to benefit anything.

Re: Increase Gas Tax To Fight Global Warming

If you saw one of my threads a week or two ago, a guy (who truly believed that humans should quit having babies to fight global warming) admitted that the United States could completely stop the use of ALL fossil fuels, and it still wouldn't be enough to make a difference. But a gas tax in SF might? I could think of something they could tax in San Francisco that might help........but, I'm not goin' there.

Increased prices would lower demand....how well the tax money would be used could be a question.

How about we use the money for something more useful. For instance, we could roll it up and smoke it. Or, we could make a humongous paper mache monkey.

I suspect that increasing the gas tax will have very little effect on tailpipe emissions. That's because in the long run the drivers will respond by purchasing more fuel efficient vehicles not driving less.

More efficient vehicles + Driving the exact same amount = less fuel used and lower emissions

Re: Increase Gas Tax To Fight Global Warming

Increasing the gasoline tax overtaxes some drivers (primarily lower income people) and undertaxes others. This is because lower income people typically own older vehicles that generate more emissions. So here again, the lower income shoulder most of the cost of the tax.

Re: Increase Gas Tax To Fight Global Warming

Perhaps instead of taxing gasoline consumption, the actual pollution emitted by a vehicle could be taxed. Autos could be computerized to collect this data. We could create a whole new government bureaucracy to monitor and bill motorists for how much their autos are polluting. Want do you think, should I mention this plan to some of the presidential candidates?

Re: Increase Gas Tax To Fight Global Warming

They want to tax gas price not emissions (which I don't know how you could directly tax that anyway) so it is purely based on what vehicle you drive not your income level, your vehicle gets low gas milage you pay more so unless low income people all drive vehicles with low gas milage I dont really understand...

I'll get a bit more technical; 5 percent of the vehicles on the road generate 53 percent of volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, while 10 percent of the vehicles on the road generate 76 percent of the same. The vehicles generating the bulk of the pollution have older ages, are not well maintained, and are owned by lower income people.

Actually passenger vehicles are so heavily computerized that the technology necessary to collect emissions data for tax purposes is already onboard a large percentage of the U.S. auto fleet.

Re: Increase Gas Tax To Fight Global Warming

What a joke...gas taxes are already ridiculously high...roughly 30 to 60 cents per gallon depending upon the state with a national average of around 45 cents per gallon. I think the politicians are mad that they have not been able to "cash in" with increased revenue from gasoline as the price has increased over the last few years. They are getting the same cents per gallon now as they did when it was $1.50 per gallon. PS: humans are not causing global warming and cannot stop it if it is occurring!

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

And, of course, there are NO emissions associated with constantly buying new cars. There are a few organizations out there that are fighting to force people to buy a new car every 5 years, because new cars are more efficient. They ignore the fact that making new cars generates huge emissions, is incredibly wasteful in resources and in the end becomes a "ruling class gets cars, and all the lesser, dirty people have to use mass transit."

Of course, all of this presupposes that man has a say in why our planet has a warming and cooling cycle from the beginning of time, which is in itself an idiotic proposition.

But of course, the stupider the idea, the easier it is to get stupid people to support it.
