    e-Mail used to send Spams

Just realized tonight that my hotmail account apparently has been compromised and has been used to send spam. I already changed the password and security questions. Anything else I need to do ?
Also, do you think I need to close that e-mail account ?

    Thanks

What's more likely is that someone else's address book has your email in it, and their PC has a virus that is sending out spam. Had this happen to me a couple years ago.

Nothing more you can do on your end, unless you want to try and find the sender's domain and ID (open an obvious spam message and look at the header details). If you know them, send them a message or call them. If you don't know them, send an email to abuse@[spam sender's domain] and complain.

Re: e-Mail used to send Spams

I had this happen to me. It seems to be happening quite a bit lately with hotmail and yahoo accounts. With how often it's happening, I don't think that it was someone stealing or figuring out your password. Since my hotmail was not a primary account that I used, I only accessed it by POP3 on my phone. So I don't know whether the problem lies in a virus on a computer or that hotmail or yahoo is actually compromised. I ended up closing my hotmail account and use only my gmail now.

This same thing just happened to me a week ago on hotmail. I remember getting a strange e-mail from someone just before that. It was probably automatically sent by a virus and contained a virus. I didn't think I opened it or clicked on anything, but found out soon after my account was being used to send spam.

I was out of town at the time and could only access my account by smartphone, but I was able to change the password and haven't had a problem since.

Re: e-Mail used to send Spams

My hotmail account got hacked last week too. Pretty sure it was someone remotely guessing a password because the spam was sent while my laptop was off.

Stepped it up with a new/longer password and everything should be good.

The key to the new password, it has to be a good one.

What's your e-mail address and the new password? I'm sure some of the computer guys on here can tell you if it's a strong one.
