I think what he's saying is that small town kids aren't any worse than high profile urban players.

    Exhibit A - Louisville defense.

    It's all about coaching.

enough of the fake shock n awe

u know dang well everytime iowa or iowa state lose alot of posters blame it on recruiting, specifically they rip apart iowa or midwest kids and rant about how how must only get urban n southern kids.. Im simply pointing out that isnt always the magic formula, it isnt as easy n simplistic as that.

Re: those who always rip 'smalltown iowa kids'

Louisville is in a transition period, so it's tough to accurately judge them. They clearly aren't a good football team this year. Urban or small town has nothing to do with anything, it's the location of these towns that matter to me. You're right, if we've got the choice between a small town Texas kid and a small town Iowa kid, I'll roll the dice on Texas. There's not a thing wrong with midwest kids, there just aren't enough talented ones around. There's a reason why the state of Texas has their own top 100 player ranking and Iowa on a good year will produce 8-12 D1 football players.

Transition period? I would call it a total collapse, only outdistanced by the Irish.

I'm going to have to disagree - to a point. Louisville just isn't in a "down period" - they are terrible. Their offense next year is going to lose their weapons, and their defense is on a slippery slope. Not to mention, their play calling is terrible.

I will agree that "small town players" matters based on their location. Texas small town players for the most part. However, Chicago may have more "talent", but as we've seen with Iowa, there's some personality issues there.

Recruiting is tricky, you can recruit talent but not character.

I would take a hard working small town Iowa kid any day of the week over any urbanite. Iowa's work ethic is second to none and I will take that over a 5 star I'm the best player at my position type of person anyway.

I'll take the five star recruit nine times out of ten.

And that would make a losing team. Let's face it the talent level in Iowa leaves something to be desired. If you disagree I suggest you get out of the state every now and again.

Yeah, I'll take Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart and you can have Eric Sanders and Jason Scales.

Although I do agree you need those blue collar type kids sprinkled in the mix. A guy like Ryan Kock or Nick Moser really helped us. I just don't want 9 of those caliber on each side of the ball starting for me. :)

Sanders was a walkon at Northern Iowa. In baseball terms, I think that would make him a grinder, and look where that got the White Sox....

Sanders is a heck of a QB though.

We're agreeing here - Louisville's defense is terrible, and their players are mostly urban kids who played in "big time schools".
