Re: Cubs trade Cashner to Padres

Wow. Cashner was the best starting pitcher the cubs had when he wasn't hurt (which was basically the whole season). I guess the cubs' brass decided he wasn't going to be a starting pitcher because of his durability issues and sent him packing.

He only started one game, the one in the first week where he got hurt after five innings or so. That's his only career major-league start.

He's a very good pitcher, but that's why the Cubs got a top prospect for him. That should settle 1B for the Cubs now.

I wonder if the Cubs consider trading LaHair to a team in need of a 1B now. He seemed to figure stuff out last season, but he's 29 so he's hardly a prospect anymore.

A lot of unknown with Cashners injury. A lot of potential, but he might take a huge setback with the injury. In exchange the Cubs are set at 1st base for a long time now!

Re: Cubs trade Cashner to Padres

Cashner was likely going to be a reliever anyways, but he's got a better chance to stick as a starter in SD. Either way, nice trade for the Cubs.

Not quite sure Vitters is the future at 3rd or anywhere for that matter. The cubs had him playing 1st at the end of the year at Tennessee (AA). I hope he tears it up this year in the minors.

Re: Cubs trade Cashner to Padres

It's obvious the Cubs don't want to tie $ up in the 1b position with Fielder, so they made this move. Rizzo is supposed to be very very good (26 HR's, 101 RBI in 93 games at AAA), and hits left, just what the Cubs need. Cashner was 2-6 with a 4.29 ERA, wasn't close to being their best pitchers last year (Garza/Dempster). Theo is trashing that pitching staff away, he must have really not liked it. Sounds like he's still listening to deals for Garza too. I imagine he's going to make a serious push at the free agent pitching market next year, it's suppose to be a good one with: Cain, Hamels, Greinke, Haren, Hudson, Lewis, Marcum, Anibal, Shields, and Ervin just to name a few. They'll also be some good OF's when Byrd's contract is up, as well as 3b (Reynolds, Wright).

There was a lot of talk that the Padres wanted Garza for Rizzo. I have a feeling Garza is staying now.
