Looking for a little feedback on a print publication

    Fanatics -

I'm looking for a little bit of feedback from you today. I've been tossing this idea around in my head for a while and was curious as to what you think. I do ask for no wise guy responses to this thread. Please keep your comments honest and serious as I'm going to use this feedback to help make a decision for our company.

Would you support us and purchase a print publication - a football preview magazine?

My theory is that we'd do this first-class. Meaning it would include original content, color photos, the works. I'm not sure how much it would cost. I'm frankly not even sure what it would include. I'd like to get some guest columnists, etc. but we'll have to wait and see.

Point is, we cannot afford to lose money on this. We live in an Internet world so this project would be a bit of a risk. But I also know that once June rolls around, we all go out to the local book store and stock up on annual college football mags. I figured that there might be a demand for an Iowa State-only type of annual to put on your coffee table. Let me know. Thanks in advance.

Print is scary. I personally do not buy any printed publications any more. I'd consider this though.

Re: Looking for a little feedback on a print publication

If you guys did good job (I'm sure you would) I wouldn't have a problem paying $20 for a preview mag for both major sports. The issue you're going to run into are the people who will just wait for the stuff to be said on here. I don't know if you would want it at all but I would be willing to chip in some sort of content as well. So, personally, yes, it sounds great. I would maybe put a poll up here as well to gauge interest.

I would definitely purchase a magazine like this. Gotta support the Cyclones!

I MIGHT be interested in something like this... and might be willing to drop as much as $20 on it... Maybe a pre-order would help prevent overprinting?

Re: Looking for a little feedback on a print publication

I'm already salivating at the thought of a football publication.

I'm sure I know the answer, but I have to ask: This would be an Iowa State only football preview? Not anything such as a Big 12, etc.?

If it is Iowa State football preview, I'm down for a couple. The cost does not bother me one bit, since it is football coverage.

Re: Looking for a little feedback on a print publication

I'd buy one. I always enjoy reading previews about Iowa State and a whole magazine full of articles regarding the Cyclones would be great. I guess one thing you could do to get if off the ground the first couple of years would be have pre-orders so that way you know how many to print, plus an additional amount that would go to the stores, so that way you wouldn't get hung on unsold copies.

I'd like to say I would, but I doubt it would actually happen. I don't really read news/magazines in print anymore.

Re: Looking for a little feedback on a print publication

I'd personally be interested. I actually enjoyed reading the Hawkeyes football preview magazine that a friend had at his lake cabin. If it's done well, I think there could be a lot of interest.

I also know that, at least for me, my dad would be interested, since he doesn't live around here and doesn't get much news about the Cyclones; it could be a great opportunity for alumi/fans who are not in Iowa (and ones who maybe aren't very internet savvy) to get some information on the upcoming season.

Re: Looking for a little feedback on a print publication

My suggestion is refundable pre-order. This way you know if it will be a success or not without the risk. If you don't have enough purchases to make money before production begins then you refund the money.

People will always say "I'll buy" but then back out, which would could become a big loss for the site.

Set a time limit for the decision so anyone that pre-orders know in advance when the decision will be made with their money "invested". At that point either you have enough people and produce it or refund the money.

Also, a page with advertisements for CycloneFanatic supporting/advertising businesses would be a good way to remind us who keeps the site free. That way we know who else to support.

I'd be in favor of it as long as it had some real substance.

I would support this just because I love this site and ISU but I do not usually buy print. Does that help?

Re: Looking for a little feedback on a print publication

    I would also be interested.

You could maybe also do a version that a person could order online and download a pdf of it. Then you wouldn't have printing costs.

This is a serious comment too, can we do a cheerleader issue if this happens?

Most of these magazines for other schools have a 1-2 page preview for each team on the schedule. I'd guess this would have to be part of any kind of ISU football preview magazine to make it worthwhile.
