Has anyone been to South Africa?

If so, please let me know if there is something you highly recommend.

We will be in Cape Town and Kruger National Park for the majority of our trip.

    I appreciate any advice!

Re: Has anyone been to South Africa?

I make the trip about once a year for business but it has been several years since I have visited Cape Town. Include a wine tour while there and a trip to the top of Table Mountain. Absolutlely beautiful and the people are wonderful. Likewise the Kruger is overwhelming and hopefully you have the opportunity for a night drive. the attached should help in Capr Town

If you get a chance, I really recommend blessing the rains down in Africa.

Wear lots of flashy jewelry and walk around alone at night.

I don't really have much to offer, but I do know a handful of people that went over for the World Cup in 2010 and had a great time.

Re: Has anyone been to South Africa?

The V&A Waterfront is one of the most overdeveloped and tacky places in the world. Its like an American shopping mall dropped on the side of the ocean in Cape Town with a bunch of mimes and bad street musicians thrown on top.

If you are going to buy souvenirs or artwork you have to buy it as close to where it as made as possible to save money and cut the middle men out. The stuff for sale at the airport or tourist places is made in China or Indonesia, it kinda defeats the purpose of helping the local artists when you buy that stuff.

Some of local rap or kwaito house music has had limited overseas success over the past few years. Township Funk by Mujava nearly crossed over into the dace music market. The current critical darling for music collectors is Shangaan Electro:

Re: Has anyone been to South Africa?

    We went last summer.

Cape Town is beautiful. Our main reason for going down to the cape (and for going to SA in general) was to hit the Great White Shark diving in Gansbaai. I reccomend this very highly and can give fruther advice on this if you would like. The last thing on our Cape Town list was to go to Table Mountain, we thought it would just be another mountain and we wouldn't miss out on much if we coudn't make it. Make sure you go up to the top, absolutely breathtaking views. We headed down to the Cape of Good Hope, pretty nice trip but probably not a must do. Took a tour of the wine country, pretty nice and relaxing. The Waterfront is very touristy, but easy place to pick up souveneirs. We were very much looking forward to the District 6 museum but were underwhelmed.

We went to the Lion Sands River Lodge in the Sabi Sand game reserve, which is adjacent to Kruger. My understanding is that Kruger has more stringent rules as to where you can go while the smaller private reserves let you go a few more places off-road. Absolutely amazing, we saw just about everything we could hope to see (all up close and personal in an open air land rover): Lions, elephants (rode and elephant as a rescue center), leapords, cheetahs, buffalo, hippos, rhinos, hyenas, zebras, wildabeast, wild dogs, crocodiles, giraffes, monkeys, every kind of antelope you could think of, etc.

    Overall, great trip.

Re: Has anyone been to South Africa?

I was just there over winter break! I went to Jburg, Kruger National Park, and Cape Town. Stayed at Sabi Sands at Kruger and saw the same- everything you could imagine from rhinos to hippos to elephants, all up close. Totally awesome.
For Cape Town, if you do end up going to the waterfront, go to Belthazars. Best steaks I've had in my entire life. Holy cow. Also I hear they have great wine but I'm underage for that :( If you go to Table Mountain, DON'T go at sunset unless you want horrendous lines. We literally spent 2 hours trying to get down the mountain from traffic. Make sure you check out Robben Island (where Mandela was prisoner) as well, really cool stuff. There's also a very cool drive to the southernmost point in Cape Town. Oh, and make sure to see penguins! Hope you have a great trip!
