This is what I was thinking as well. By hiring from within it sets a tone that if you put in your time and are successful you will have the opportunity to move up. Sets the tone for some good coaches who are younger or from smaller schools to come here as position coaches and be willing to stay. One thing that gets looked over here all the time is that there are some great position coaches in the lower levels of college football, and a system like this is a great way to attract them to ISU. They may never become a coordinator at ISU but the option is there, and with enough time and success it will open them up to other coordinator jobs at other schools.

This is how the Hayden Fry coaching tree was created that we all heard so much about for so many years. Time to start the Paul Rhoads coaching tree.

I'm more interested in having a coach at the OC position than a supermodel.

This guy will be so good he'll leave for a head coaching job after next season.

Just trying to counteract some of the nervous nellie posts.

    Re: MESS named OC

I actually really like the hire. He has proven himself to the ISU staff and CPR the 4 years he has been here. Also like the fact he is an Iowa Boy (resume includes coaching and playing at many Iowa Schools). If he turns out to be a diamond in the rough, we could have a good OC for many years. CPR wants staff that is ALL-IN and I believe he has gotten one in Messingham. Not to mention he has signed some decent commits already for 2012 (Barkley Hill, Charles Rogers, and Duaron WIlliams), showing he has decent recruiting ability.

    Re: MESS named OC

I was wondering since it was taking so long if CPR was looking to poach a bowl school for one of their coaches. Either couldn't pay enough, they weren't interested or Messingham was the best option (I like to think it's the latter). At least he will be well motivated to succeed, knows the players and skill sets they each have. He did do a lot of good things with the special teams and some of the receivers. I would have to think the offense "system" will stay pretty similar since he doesn't have an offense he would be bringing in from somewhere else. Terminology should be consistent, which will be huge, so they don't have to re-think on play changes.

    Re: MESS named OC

Now are they going to keep Mess at WR coach and bring in a new QB coach and sp teams coord. or move Mess to QB coach along with being the Off. coordinator?

    Re: MESS named OC

I wasn't very excited when I first heard this, but after reading through the thread, I have to admit, I'm feeling more positive about it. Granted, we are not going to keep and OC here forever if he is doing well, but I like the idea that the guy has been with our program and therefore he has some connections to the players and the staff. In the end, it's another one of those hopes that if he does well, it takes the perfect oppoutunity for him instead of just a few more bucks to get him to move on to another program. When you are able to promote from within and feel conifident about it, it means you are building the program right. Only time will tell, but I have faith in CPR.

    Re: MESS named OC

I guess I just don't get it... I could see promoting from within if the offense was lighting the world on fire, but it wasn't. In fact, the offense was down right bad. So, was Messingham's input not being taken into account by Herman? Also looked back at Missouri State's one season with Messingham at OC, not exactly something that gets you excited.

    Re: MESS named OC

So will Mess still coach WR as well as OC and we go get a QB coach or does he switch positions?

I'm hoping we go out and get a dedicated QB coach and keep Mess on the WRs.

EDIT: Flander beat me to it.

I love the hire, but wish CPR would hire a qb coach.

Says in the article he will be the qb coach. I would rather have a specific qb coach.

You can't hold a position coach responsible for the offense's performance when he wasn't the guy in charge.

The bottom line is that it doesn't have to get you or I excited. This hire just has to produce on the field. CPR has worked around a lot of different coaches between ISU (the first time), Pitt and Auburn, so it's not like he hasn't seen what a good coach looks like.

He has also worked around Messingham now at ISU and if he has confidence in him, then it's probably a safer hire than going outside the program. CPR's compensation, longevity and appeal to other schools, not to mention winning versus losing, will rest greatly on Messingham's shoulders, and CPR knows that. That is why I would take comfort in his decision.
