Larry Scott wants Pac12 to get into China

Larry Scott has been pushing to get the new PAC12 network carried in China. Now this comes out...Can you imagine some random game like Iowa State-Texas Tech in China?

Scott foresees Pac-12 team playing game in China - College Football - Rivals.com

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP)—Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott says he believes a team from the conference will be playing a football game in China “in the not too distant future.”

Scott, speaking at halftime of the Fiesta Bowl, said Stanford and Notre Dame would like to play in China as early as 2013. Scott said that might be too soon, based on information he gathered in a recent trip to Beijing.

He said he plans to have further discussions on the subject with officials from Stanford and Notre Dame. Scott said that if it’s not 2013, it is just a matter of time before the Pac-12 introduces college football to the world’s largest country.

Re: Larry Scott wants Pac12 to get into China

Larry Scott is putting alot of pressure on his conference's football teams, especially the middle and bottom teir teams. He said that he wants to keep the 9 game conference schedule even with the added B1G games and also wants Stanford and USC to continue playing Notre Dame. That is going to make things really tough for a team like Stanford, Andrew Lucks don't come around that often.

He's been floating this idea for awhile. Just another money grab.

Clearly an idea designed to benefit student-athletes. Taking this trip and back to China during the semester surely won't have any effect on their studies.

No kidding! Can you imagine being USC/Stanford and playing 9 conference games + a Big 10 team + Notre Dame. That gives you no scheduling flexibility and only 1 cupcake. Throw on top of that the loss of another home game to China.

He is maximizing TV dollars in the money grab, but at what cost will it come? Sometimes W's are more important for the overall health/success of a program than money if you're already in a BCS conference.

Eh, I'm far from a Larry Scott fan, but flying two teams with high academic requirements out for a once-in-a-lifetime experience as essentially cultural ambassadors to China is a far cry from making your women's softball team fly from Dallas to Storrs for a Tuesday night game.

Except that the purpose of the China trip is this: $$$$$$$$$$$$

Clearly this is benefiting the student athlete..

That could very well be, but even a greedy bastard like Scott can accidentally hit on an idea that would actually be of value to the student athletes.

In the summer, it would be. During the semester, that's still a huge distraction.

I'm assuming there's some sightseeing involved here. I think jetlag is a necessary assumption.

It would be a huge distraction from their semester routine. It takes them away from attending classes, which is kind of a big part of being a student-athlete. Add an extra measure of physical challenge with the travel, and I think it's making a mess of that part of their semester.

That said, if they're going to go through with this, the kids ought to be paid for the trip. If they're going as cultural ambassadors/moneymakers for the school and network, they ought to get paid for this trip (assuming it happens).

I think Scott is quickly sinking into insanity over this money grab he has going. College football is quickly losing it's identity in search of the almighty dollar.

They'd be going because Larry Scott was hired to increase Pac 12 revenue. Logistics be damned, he wants his salary bonuses.

How is it going to be of value for the student-athletes? Unless this is the first game of the year, the athletes aren't going to be in China with any appreciable time to do any meaningful site seeing or cultural exchange. If they are, it will come at the expense of their college studies.

From the "ambassador" standpoint, wouldn't it make more sense to send a couple of the better Pac-12 volleyball/ basketball/gymnastics teams on a short summer tour? At least the Chinese have some interest in those sports and there would be some common ground on which to relate to each other. Do the Chinese even give a hoot about American football???
