    Arizona State Preview and Prediction

First off, congrats to the team for their performance at Midlands. Goettl and Gibson especially really gave us a reason to cheer last week.

The wrestling team travels to Arizona State on Tuesday for a very winnable meet against the Sun Devils.

    My projected lineups:
    125: #11 Ryak Finch (8-3) vs. Dalton Miller (6-5)
133: Robert Hallman (4-9) vs. Shane McGough (6-7)
141: Luke Goettl (5-7) vs. Nathan Hoffer (12-5)
149: Luke Swalla (1-8) vs. Kyle McIntosh (1-3) or Joel Smith (3-6)
157: Mike Moreno (0-6) vs. Victor De Jesus (2-9)
    165: #4 Andrew Sorenson (16-2) vs. Derek Felton (1-4)
174: Mikey England (12-6) vs. Jacob Graham (2-4) or Eric Starks (6-3)
    184: #13 Boaz Beard (5-1) vs. Kevin Radford (6-5)
197: Cole Shafer (7-8) vs. Tommy Burriel (7-5)
HWT: Matt Gibson (12-5) vs. #11 Levi Cooper (14-4)

I'm making some guesses on the lineups and will update if need be. I'm assuming that Finch, Moreno, and Beard will all be back in the lineup, Cozart and Spangler will both be out, and Mayfield won't be making a return yet. Even with all these people out there is not a single match that we shouldn't be able to compete in. Even Swalla has a chance of being more than a sacrificial lamb in this one. I fully expect us to get our first dual meet win of the year on Tuesday.

    Here's my prediction:
125: Finch (ISU) by major 4-0
133: McGough (ASU) by decision 4-3
141: Goettl (ISU) by decision 7-3
149: McIntosh (ASU) by decision 7-6
157: Moreno (ISU) by decision 10-6
165: Sorenson (ISU) by fall 16-6
174: England (ISU) by major 20-6
184: Beard (ISU) by decision 23-6
197: Shafer (ISU) by decision 26-6
HWT: Cooper (ASU) by decision 26-9
    Final: 26-9 Iowa State

I'm not very confident in Moreno, so 23-12 might be more realistic.

The two key matches should be at 141 and Heavyweight. Both Goettl and Gibson performed awesomely at Midlands and will be up against Arizona State's two best wrestlers. This means they'll have a chance to show us whether Midlands was a fluke or they really have taken things to another level.

Heard Shayden will be a 133. Orginially Beard was not going to wrestle at Arizona State. I don't know if that change when Spangler got hurt and England moved to 174 instead of 184.

I have to assume that Shafer isn't certified at 184 anymore (otherwise he would have been 184 for Midlands), so I don't think you could do Shafer at 184 and Christenson at 197. What about Wilson Quinn or Matt Riley? Neither have wrestled a match this year but are on the roster on Cyclones.com and you wouldn't have to burn a redshirt for either of them. At the very least you could bring one of them and only toss Beard out there if we have to have a win.

Re: Arizona State Preview and Prediction

I kind of figure that Cole had probably lost is 184 certification when Kyven went down for good. Same thought, that Cole would have had more success at 184 then 197 at the Midlands. Quinn wrestled the Nicholes open I believe, haven't heard anything about Riley, except that he isn't working real hard at wrestling. Not sure if thats true or not.
I wonder if Christensen is certified at 184? Not sure why he wouldn't have wrestled at Midlands tho.

Also extra good luck to our Arizona boys (Luke Goettl and Ryak Finch), as they go home to wrestle in front of their friends and family!

I forgot and/or missed that. So that is a possiblity at 184 for ASU. I know/heard prior to Midlands, KJ was planning on keeping Beard out thru the ASU dual.

I'm not sure how the rules work since he wrestled a few matches at Heavyweight for us. He was at 197 at the Cyclone Open, but that might have had to do with how much weight he was allowed to cut in the week after being a Heavy.

Re: Arizona State Preview and Prediction

I think you have to weigh in at a certain amount, no matter what weight you wrestle. England weighs in at 177 when wrestling 184.

Your right, totally forgot about that. He lost 3-1 to a guy from Eastern Michigan and 2-1 to a guy from Stanford.

Visiting team gets the call on when to start the meet, right? My guess is we start at 125 and make putting in Beard a match time decision, Christenson if the meet is out of hand or if we just need to not get pinned, Beard if we have to get a win.

Makes sense Judoka. As a team, we need this win. ASU also beat Army earlier this year, I believe.

Re: Arizona State Preview and Prediction

I seen the weight loss rule is 1.5% of what you weighed in at. That is the most you are allowed to lose/weight in. Something like that. So the most Cole could ever weigh in at and not lose certification is 186.75 (1.5% of that is 2.8 pounds)

Coaches have to agree, or it goes to a draw.
