Re: Iowa State's Defensive Performance This Year

Doesnt suprise me that much. Our defense when given ome offensive support (ie keep them off the field and keep them fresh) is at least respectable and toward the end of the season was pretty salty.

“It’s beyond pride. It’s a restored trust. There’s a confidence again, a passion that teeters on swagger. More than anything, (Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads) has restored the Iowa State “it” factor, the steadfast belief that it is great to be a Cyclone...the man’s enthusiasm is genuine to the core...”

Re: Iowa State's Defensive Performance This Year

Iowa only had 24 in regulation so I count that one as under average. These are facts everyone already knew. Our defense was really good and our offense was lacking. I like our offense's future a lot though.

I like what we return and what we brought in to replace on the defensive side of the ball. Not looking forward to losing our LB's after next season.

By that time we all hope the D-line has been developed and should help make it easier on new LB's. Also, should have a couple experienced impact safeties backing up those LB's.

I just want Knott and Klein are able to stay healthy and have 1 more monster season next year. They both deserve it and hope they have futures in the NFL.

Think of how good they could have been with some offense behind them

Re: Iowa State's Defensive Performance This Year

When you think about how much this D was on the field, those numbers mean even more. I think it speaks to just how strong our coaching staff is on that side of the ball. This defense definitely has talent(especially at the 2nd and 3rd level) but I think the coaching staff pushes them to another level. I'm really excited about the kids that will contribute next season that have had a couple years under this staff.

No the last line is much more depressing when you realize we had 5 OT periods added into the stats.

Re: Iowa State's Defensive Performance This Year

With the exception of a few drives throughout the season, it may have been the best defense I remember, especially considering how many times the offense blundered, either by turning it over deep in our territory or the inability to sustain drives.

One glaring exception: That last series vs. KSU — bend-not-break became bend-and-break.

But without the D's play, I doubt we would have beaten KU and OSU. Certainly not both.

Note: The offense had plenty of special moments during the year — we could make a top-10 list of impact-heavy offensive plays. Bu in general, it did the defense no favors.

Without the OT periods ISU averaged 20 PPG.
