    Mudflap's latest report

    Braking Cyclone News

    by Kentucky_Mudflap Sun Dec 25, 2011 5:13 pm

Hombres first of all best wishes for a happy Christmas and a Merry New Year you gents are like a reel family to me took me in win nobody else wanted me brings a tear to my eye every time I get to thinking about it outa the joint won day then the Voice of Wrestling the next seems like brings me to my point was down to the casino at Riverside for some Xmas cheer with the hands ran into won of my best sources pored some truth serum down his gullet turns out some gents upstairs in Cyclone land asked Gable to to take a good long look at the Cyclone program and tell them whats wrong whos at fault and what its gonna take to fix it.

Caballeros Gable said he wasnt reel clear what they was doing up to Ames was wrestling leastways he wouldnt call it that said from what he saw they wasnt much on the fundamentals of the worlds oldest and gratest sport but hed take a look and ask around at Midlands and come back with and let them know that it was gonna take to clean up that mess gents some folks say it was Kale took them 3 recruiting years of young freshman some gents are saying its because KJs an ******* and some are saying its just plain bad luck and injuries what do you gents think.

Hombres Lady Luck was running hot at the roolette weel I was way up betting black then my luck changed and I bailed out took 11 grand in chips to the window gents they took the taxes but Im thinking a new skid loader or a ski doo friends what would you do my new old ladies coming with me and the hands to Midlands look but dont touch gents Im the jealous type if you know what I mean and you do know what I mean cant wait for Midlands Ill be posting up my predictions and all and well make plans about the annual Midlands poster party any of you gents got some ideas about the whens and wheres then post up.

I actually think this is a good idea, bring in an outside person to look at the program. This could even be wanted by KJ. Sometimes when you are to close to the problem, you can't see it. It may be the workout, the coaches techinque, who knows. Gable would be great for this, because I believe he still is the best ambassador for wrestling.

Translation: Dan Gable is doing some short-term consulting for the ISU wrestling program to try to identify why we suck. According to a "source" that is.

    Dear Mr Mudflap

Will our beloved clone wrestlers ever win a dual meet?

Not just this year but forever?

Kevin Jackson knew the expectations of ISU wrestling when he took the job. I hope that his resume is up to date.

I"m curious: Does Mudflap have any credibility?

I find it hard to believe that the ISU Athletic Dept would entertain asking Gable to consult, even just nose around at the Midlands.

There is something wrong with the team sitting at 0-8. The upcoming schedule looks tough. Is it possible that ISU ends the season at 0-15?

MU, OU and OSU again. That makes it 0-11.

ASU and VA Tech, maybe, but lost to Army, Boston and Old Dom and they aren't ranked in the top 30 either. 0-13.

That leaves UNI and Cornell. 0-14 after the Cornell meet?

    Something has to change.

    Re: Mudflap's latest report

To me the 3 most winnable duals are UNI, ASU, and Virginia Tech

I don't know what is mean't by consulting. I personally don't have a problem with it. It might be sitting back in practice and see how KJ and assistants coach and train. I might include how weight cutting is handled, how recruits are selected. Could be anything. As far as I know, KJ might have asked for this. If he has a relationship with Gable and is lost on how to fix some things, I think it is smart for him to evaluate it. IF THIS IS TRUE!

    Re: Mudflap's latest report

Mudflap is just a random poster on a very Iowa centric board. His posts are occasionally amusing and he doesn't seem to have anything particularly against Iowa State like some of the posters on themat, but generally he just makes stuff up.

It's very possible the team has brought in somebody from the outside like Gable to take a look at how things are being run, but I wouldn't expect any kind of breaking news from that guy.

If Gable is retired, then it wouldn't be a conflict for him to add 2 cents or more to the situation. I talked with KJ several times and he was very confident in his ability to make ISU wrestling a champion again, but it certainly isn't working.

I have searched for NCAA tournament records for listings of final team scores and haven't been successful. I don't recall ISU wrestling being this bad at any time since the late 60s and early 70s. Even though the last NCAA championship was in 1987, ISU still won matches and placed highly in NCAA tournaments. ISU had champions and high placers in many of the weight classes.

Can someone detail how ISU has historically performed to put this year and last year into perspective?

    Thanks.

I think honestly, the team has never been this bad as a whole(since I started watching in the late 80s). The thing is, the situation for KJ at the start was also as bad as it had been. But if you look at the old Bobby Douglas teams, there were a lot of things that were different. You had upperclassmen that were competing for championships every year, usually 3 guys that could be counted on as finalists, You had about 3 AA candidates in the sophomore and junior ranks who could compete with anyone, and could be counted on for points in meets against all but the most elite. And you had quality RS Fr(1-2) that would win 2/3 of their matches(usually 20-10 type guys).

The only thing disappointing me about KJ's team right now is his RS Fr are losing 2/3 of their matches, not winning 2/3 of them, and they are absolutely not able to compete with the elite guys.

There is something wrong with either the evaluation or the preparation right now. Hopefully this can all get fixed. We are in no position to hire another coach unless we want to break the bank and really spend on the next guy.

    Re: Mudflap's latest report

Part of the problem KJ has was developing wrestler and providing depth. This class of Redshirt freshman that is at Iowa State right now, has no blue chip recruits. The best of the class appear to be - Shayden Terukina (not even ranked at his weight coming out of high school), Tanner Weatherman (Only wrestler in this class ranked in top 125 nationally), and Logan Molina (if ranked, its was 20 to 25 at his weight).

In KJ 1st year, we had 25 on the team and 7 were seniors (6 starting until Gallick got hurt)
In KJ 2nd year, we had 32 on the team and 4 seniors (1-3 starting, Druion and Carr off and on)
This year, we have 39 on the team and 3 seniors (1 starting)
Next year, we have 3 seniors (Spangler, Gibson, and Mayfield)

In this year's recruiting class, it appears KJ is going after a higher level of recruits, in Meeks, McCauley and Moreno. Add in Bauer, Larson, and Doyle that is much better talent

As far as KJ's 1st recruiting class, Cozart does not seem to be panning out, T Voelker has not wrestled more than 1 open tourney, Gadsen gets hurt right away. England is stuck behind Spangler, Finch is doing good, and Goettl and Moreno I hope continue to improve.

KJ is paid ?125,000? Asst's get much less. I don't know if he has a long term contract.

ISU attendance is low. Probably will go lower. A winner would help with attendance and that would pay a few bills.

Double the coach's salary and ISU will be flooded with opportunities.

I enjoy talking to KJ, he is engaging and enthusiastic but I know Jamie and he won't sit still. He wants the Cy-Hawk trophy every year. He wants to beat Iowa. He wants winners. He wants championships. He wants the women's teams and the lower revenue men's teams to win.

We'll know more in 3 days after the Midlands. Does the ship sail or sink further?

If we change coaches, do we keep Meeks and McCauley? I know both are coming because of KJ. I think if any changes are made, 1st you try to upgrade the lightweight coach to a name person. It can even be a recent college grad.
How about a Paul Donahoe, Mike Thorn, Nate Gallick, or Dan Dennis?

Probably a no thanks on Donohue. He may be good, but there will be questions on his character given his exit from Nebby.

Thorn is intriguing, especially when you factor in his little brother that's a stud 10th(?) grader up in MN. That said, he was never a champ. How about Jayson Ness? I think he's on the bench for Minny.
