    Do I have this right:

I know athletes are given 4 year scholarships and coaches rarely break that promise. But technically aren't scholarships renewed each year, so is there really such a thing as a 4 year scholarship?

You have it right. Might change, though.

Thanks, though I hope it doesn't change. Might keep kids more "all in" if they know they have to do what's expected or risk losing their scholarship.

I think coaches rarely pull scholarships because it's hard on recruiting. Similarly to the stuff that is happening at St. Josephs where the coach won't allow that grad student player to play at UAB because they have his graduate program. Looks bad for the coach and school to pull scholarships. There's a de facto guarantee of 4 year scholarships already.
