    Exclamation Job help: Bank/loan position

Hey everyone, I am trying to get any help that I can here. I am graduating in December with a degree in Finance; and I want to start in a bank job, hopefully something like a loan officer. I am wondering if anyone here works at a bank or has ties where there is or will be a position opening up. I am hoping to work in the Des Moines area. I am doing the whole "career builder" thing, but I am not finding much yet. Any help is very much appreciated! If you have any leads/suggestions, please contact me at mike4cy@iastate.edu.

    Re: Job help: Bank/loan position

I would find the bank websites available in those areas and look for job opps. It wouldnt hurt to send some resumes out even if they arent posting a job yet. CareerBuilder and monster are great, but businesses dont always use them.

I'm thinking he knows about looking at the job boards but I'm betting he was hoping to get in contact with someone on "the inside" at a bank somewhere.

Usually there are some bank jobs listed on the ISU career services page. I don't know if many are in Des Moines though.

    Re: Job help: Bank/loan position

Just for a reference. I might hold off on being something like a Mortgage loan broker at a bank at this point. The housing market sucks and probably won't rebound for a few years. I know a lot of people who make huge money the last few years doing it. Now they are having trouble putting food on the table. Just some quick advice.

That is because there are too many people in the field and no one is refinancing or buying new houses since interest rates are so much higher than a few years ago. It will all even out in the next few years. Housing market cannot stay dead forever.

I agree. It's not the right time to start out in that field. Wait a few years.

Don't listen to them, get out there sell yourself, you'll land on your feet. First jobs out of school are the toughest and teach you alot about yourself. Companies, especially corporations are looking for assets not employees if you have that state of mind you'll go far.

    Re: Job help: Bank/loan position

A good way to get started in the banking industry is to become a bank examiner. A lot of examiners get hired as loan officers within a year or two and the experience you get knowing lending laws and how different banks operate is great. I'd try the Iowa Division of Banking (based in Des Moines).

    Re: Job help: Bank/loan position

To follow up on Trevn's suggestion there are a number of federal agencies and quasi-federal organizations that you could apply with that either regulate financial institutions or provide financial services:

1)Department of the Treasury; Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (primary regulatory of federally chartered banks)
    2)FDIC
3)Department of the Treasury; Office of Thrift Supervision (primary regulatory of savings and loans)
    4)Federal Reserve Banks
5)Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines

I have worked as a bank regulator, for an investment bank, and as a Treasurer of a commercial bank. I found capital market activities (investments) to be far more interesting and enjoyable than being engaged in lending.
