College Students Living beyond our means?

The other thread on financing a laptop got me thinking, I think college kids (I am currently in college just FYI) live way beyond our means. Seems like everyone spends a lot of money. $100+ jeans, electronics up the wazoo, flat screens, surround sound, bowl trips, spring break trips, etc.

I hear so many complaining about tuition hikes and all, I don't know, it seems like if tuition was such a big problem and people were really worried about their money situation they wouldn't be spending on all this stuff.

    Anyone else agree with me?

I'm in college and have nothing except a computer that I paid up the *** for because it's for my major.

    You can argue that.

But the price of a computer or a TV is a drop in the bucket compared to tuition(especially out of state tuition).

Re: College Students Living beyond our means?

I hear some people I know talking about trips to places like Cancun for spring break and I just don't understand it. I will never go on a trip like that while I'm in school and probably not for a few years after. I have an old tube TV in my room that works just fine and I think I'm the only one I know who does. I've been in rooms with multiple flat screen TV's. I'm not a big fashion guy. My preferred appearance is Levi jeans and one of the free shirts I get from the Athletic Department and various other activities. I try my best to live within my means, but I also realize I do go outside of them a lot. I am going to the bowl game, but I'm going with my family who is willing to pay for me.

I love to read the fine print in eastern Iowa newspapers every week--the burglaries.

I focus on the 'hood....full of nice people mixed in with a lot of thugs and criminals and Section 8 people and run-down houses

Items ?: $2000-$4000 in 'ELECTRONICS" stolen?

WTF? these people sucking off our welfare system--seem to have endless supply of cash to buy thousands of dollars in ELECTRONICS.

I also loved the people relagated to Gov't loaned FEMA trailers being interviewed on their doorstep after the flood of '08.

A 46" flatscreen in the background typically.

Re: College Students Living beyond our means?

It is a major problem to be honest. Most of these things college kids are buying are either with borrowed money or on dad's credit card. It's easy to spend money that isn't your's. These are also the same people who will pay student loans until they are 80. I overheard a kid talking about getting a $300 tatoo with his refund, how messed up is that? I'm in college as well but, I know what I can spend and what I can't. If I graduate dead broke with no debt I will be one happy man.

However, this problem is not even close to applying strictly to college kids. Everyone thinks they need to keep up with the Jones' instead of being fiscally responsible.

Man, when I was in college, it seemed like the rage was for guys to buy crotch rockets. So many guys I knew took out a partnership loan for 5k to do that.
    Never understood that.

Re: College Students Living beyond our means?

Well said. I was just talking with a friend of mine about this very issue. People complain about a lot these days, when things to complain about are becoming fewer and fewer. Gas prices? Sure its a pain to pay $3+ per gallon, but big deal.

If you want a job, you can get a job. Unemployment my ***.
If you look around, people who want a big trip can go on that trip. Want a motorcycle? Buy one. I'm not super wealthy by any means and neither are almost everyone I am around. People have jobs, work hard and can afford things they want. Be smart with your money and you can have nice things.

Kids these days <looking out window, shaking fist>

I said/heard the same things when I was in college 10 years ago. I'd imagine the people 10 years before me said/heard the same things.

Hot college girls can pay for college by stripping on the weekends.
