Monroe hasn't been hitting all that great either. Felix has a good glove and great arm. More than anything, he's probably on the roster for his speed.

Glad to see Fontenot still on the roster. What surprises me a little more is Cedeno on the roster over the likes of Monroe or even Blanco - a bigger bat. And a little surprised to see Eyre get the nod over Ohman.

Can they redo this roster if the go to the NLCS? 3 (4) starters for a 7 game series??

Marquis- what a head case, how can he be so good early in the season and just fall off to nothing. Glad to see Soto on the roster and Blanco off, lets hope Soto keeps the hot bat going. I think the key as has been all year is Soriano. I also hope Fontenot and Theriot have a good series, I think they have that Eckstein X-factor to their game.

    Re: Cubs NLDS Roster

Soto is getting the start tonight too. Hart has been great and the right handers have done well against lefties so I can see how he beat out Ohman. Monroe was a surprise but have to have some left handed bats on that bench too even if they are Pie and Fontenot. At least those 2 guys can come in and play some late inning defense if needed or pinch run.

    Re: Cubs NLDS Roster

Is the plan for Zambano to go in Game 4?

Dumb question: Do players left off the post season roster get to watch from the dugout and at least act like they are part of the team? It seems like a ***** that Marshall pitches as a quality 5th starter all year and then has to watch from home.

    Re: Cubs NLDS Roster

A surprising number of those players logged significant time with the Iowa Cubs this summer. That adds some interest for me, as a fan of the I-Cubs. Has Chicago lost a lot of players to injury this season or why are there so many positions available?

Yeah well, ya know, that's just, like uh, your opinion, man.

SOTO IS THE MAN. I predict this kid will come up big for us in the post-season. 2nd prediction, D Lee turns up the heat.

It's a combination of injuries and lack of production. Theriot was an I-Cub from previous years, but played the whole season with Chicago and beat out Izturis who was later traded. Felix Pie has been on the fast track to Chicago since he first set foot in Des Moines, but isn't hitting so has been back and forth. Most of the time, he's been called up due to two injuries to Soriano. Don't really recall the circumstances that sent Fontenot to Chicago - might have been when DeRosa tweaked his hand. But he tore it up when he got there and has earned his keep. Scott More got a stint when D Lee got suspended, and has subsequently been traded. Soto is considered to be the catcher of the future for the Cubs, and was only slowed down by a bad shoulder (?) this spring. Koyie Hill got sent up when Blanco got hurt and Soto wasn't ready. Little surprised they reactivated Blanco and sent him down, but I'm sure contracts and such played a factor in that. Eric Patterson was sent up as a utility player as well, when Soriano got hurt, and got moved back up at the end of August when they expanded the rosters. Of course Murton spent a month or two down here simply because he wasn't getting it done and needed to play every day.

    Re: Cubs NLDS Roster

I say this is a very balanced roster that is right on track on who was hot towards the end of the season. You could have kepts some more "experienced" players, but if they are not doing their job, what good does that do.

I am more please to see Soto keep a spot. He is young, but if you use this quote of the day as a good reason.
"I don't think experience is a big deal. I didn't have any in '02 with the Giants. Robb Nen told me, it's just like the 'Hoosier' [movie] thing -- it's still 60 feet, 6 inches to the plate, it's still 90 feet to the bases. Crowds are going to boo you when you throw ball one, they're going to cheer you when you throw strike one. If someone gets a hit, it'll be run over and over again on TV. You have to forget it a little bit and think it's the same game." -- Eyre, on whether postseason experience matters.

So does Marmol get the nod as the closer?

Unfortunately no. You have to look at numbers again. Dempster honestly does have a pretty good closing percentage since being designated as a closer. With his experience as well, you HOPE that he can pull it through.

BUT, if it came to back to back games, I really wouldn't be surprised to see Marmol close one out. The Cubs need to keep all the fresh arms they can. They've had one of the best bullpens this year in the National League, and have done that with the current rotation they got.

    Yeah, the team decides.
