Who ends up getting the Penn State job?

I heard our buddy Bo Peep was in the running on ESPN, but it sounds like he probably won't go.

Edit: Move this to General College Forum.

    FIU's coach is a possibility.

If the situation were different, KF would go.

Why is everyone saying all the big names are running away from this job? I get that the scandal tainted the university, but those people are gone.

I bet Tom Bradley keeps it. I don't think PSU feels the need to completely clean house aside from what they have already done.

This is dead wrong. Spanier and Paterno are still on faculty. Investigations are ongoing. A conspiracy has been proven to exist, but the bottom of it has not been discovered. More charges are highly possible. Federal trafficking crimes might be involved.

Penn State is poisoned for years to come. This is far worse than the SMU death penalty situation - check out their coaching options for decades following that conspiracy, and it only involved payments to players.

No established coach free of serious drawbacks will consider this job. Those flawed ones that would consider this job (think Mangino, Tressel) won't be acceptable to Penn State for appearances' sake.

They will be a rebuilding program for years to come.

Exactly. There is a thin line when it comes to being a major program and not (which is why you see even major programs cheat), and this is one hell of an obstacle that will linger on for years to come, and rightly so.

Re: Who ends up getting the Penn State job?

A microcosm of the Penn St. search is in its expectations and failures in the search so far.

Dan Mullen was their leading candidate and he angrily responded to the speculation. When a 6-6 Pennsylvania native from Mississippi State is angry about being associated with the vacancy, you have a problem.

Penn State launched its search 40 days ago, and its top picks were very much middle of the pack, non-big names.

So, when formerly high-standard PSU aims low, and misses?

    Not a good situation.

No way they could hire Tressell. He just got put on Cause or whatever it's called. They might as well hire Jim Walden for 3 years, then start looking for the right guy. At least Walden had fun special teams play.

Mario Cristobal is a hell of a football coach and has some great recruiting ties. If he gets the Penn St job, and he's rumored to be talking to Pitt as well, it would be a great hiring for Penn St.

Dan Mullen is soo angry about his agent leaking his name as a candidate for the Penn St that he had to take a $1M raise. What a terrible situation for him, my thoughts are with him.

Sorry, I forgot to mention the legitimate options that Penn State now faces:

Tom Bradley - Pros - continuity. Cons - continuity. There's no institutional wisdom in hanging onto anyone who is possibly connected to the child-rape cover-up. As long as Bradley is around, so will be the concern that PSU didn't 100% take care of the cancer.

On the other hand, it isn't like there's a line of viable candidates waiting to take the position. In any case, if they retain Bradley, they put the program on life support, but he'll be a ghost of bad memories for another 2-3 years before the next regime sweeps in to rebuild. So the Bradley option, I believe, delays the inevitable, but as long as the investigation is ongoing, I'm not sure you can make long term plans.

    Maybe Tim Murphy from Harvard?

    Also Charlie Strong from Louisville.

All seemingly decent guys who might be able to start bailing out the PSU lifeboat. The real question is, can they bail faster than it can take on water, because that program is still flooding.

This is the only current coaching position in the country where the fate of the coach lies almost completely out of his control. I'll be pleasantly surprised if the coach they hire for the short-term becomes their coach for the long-term.

I say they are best off giving Bradley a modest contract until all the residue from this shakes out, and, as long as he goes .500 or so, shouldn't count that against him until they are out of this cloud. It takes a long time for a university program to purge its institutional memory. For pity's sake, look at the long-term institutional damage that Larry Eustachy made, and that was for flirting with a Missourian.

The last player to experience this horrible turmoil will likely graduate in 2016. I'd mark the year before that (2015) as the earliest possible point to attempt a full reset of the Penn State idea.

But as long as the trials and investigations continue and as long as they let Spanier remain tenured and active and rubbing their washboard, they are going to be in permanent damage control.

    And I ain't whistling Dixie.

I totally agree, but the fact of it is, one year ago, if you are Dan Mullen and your name comes up for PSU, you don't whiz on the Lions. You make coach-speak platitudes about what a great program they are and an honor to be regarded and yadda yadda yadda.

This year, he accused those dastards from Ole Miss for spreading diseased lies.

Every coach within the potential grasp of Penn State is carrying a well-placed ten-foot pole in one hand.

I know Nittany Lions fans want to just scrub this one clean, but it just doesn't go away that easy. You can't start picking out the cockleburrs by rolling in thorns. They've got to stand up and start the careful work, however long that takes.

    Also Charlie Strong from Louisville.
Louisville AD blocked him from interviewing for other positions in the past couple weeks.
