NCAA decision on Ohio State today

NCAA to announce Ohio State Buckeyes decision Tuesday - ESPN

I hate the NCAA. There is no way that they can justify not slapping the most serious charge of lack of institutional control on Ohio State. I guess if you are Ohio State and your president has a relationship with the NCAA president, you can get special treatment.

You can get a little more detail about the relationship between Emmert and Gee in this article.

Mark Emmert has done terrible job as president of NCAA - Paul Finebaum - SI.com

Not looking for a real big blow here. Urban Meyer would not have taken the job w/o checking with NCAA first. Or should I say, the NCAA would not make a decision w/o checking with Urban first.

I want the NCAA to throw the book at them...but they'll most likely throw a couple of pages instead.

Probably the pages that outline future loopholes just to help them out some.

This paragraph made me want to throw up:

"I just did a lot of research. I contacted people outside of Ohio State before I accepted the position and I wanted to hear from some trusted people that I have within the NCAA and other people who dealt directly with the NCAA," Meyer said. "It came back -- I wouldn't use the word 'assurance,' because who knows? -- but when you start talking about the overall integrity of the institution, it's a positive. There were some mistakes made that were serious. I haven't had any assurance about what's going to happen."

NCAA releasing penalties to media at 2, asking for news embargo until 3? What year is this, 1986? No way that gets honored.

The ESPN documentary aired in 2011 about SMU, the huge cash payouts, the unscrupulous recruiting dealings in the SWC and the death penalty made one thing very clear: the NCAA will never slap the death penalty on another major college team. Period.

    See this AP article today:

From 1979-1982, Craig James was a star player at SMU and was part of the record-setting “Pony Express” backfield with Eric Dickerson. Though the Mustangs won Southwest Conference championships in 1981 and 1982, the team was also embroiled in several NCAA investigations.
In 1987, the NCAA hit SMU with the so-called “death penalty” for repeated infractions, shutting down the program for a year after finding SMU had continued to pay players after promising in 1985 it would stop. SMU also chose not to play in 1988 because the NCAA would have limited the Mustangs to only seven games, none at home.
The scandal is generally considered among the worst in college sports history. The sanctions leveled by the NCAA decimated the Mustangs program and SMU remains the only school to be given the “death penalty.”
James was never directly implicated in the NCAA transgressions and he has consistently denied any involvement.
But James also has had a close relationship with Dallas real estate developer Sherwood Blount, one of the key boosters involved in the pay-for-play scandal. Blount, who reportedly insisted SMU had a “payroll to meet” even after the school promised the payments would stop, was James’ agent when he played in the NFL.
In his book “Gameday,” James wrote: “I’m not going to sit here and tell you I never received a nickel during my playing days. But I can say with certainty that no benefits were ever extended to me from anyone associated with the SMU administration.”

Do you feel like throwing up again?

OSU could recover from the death penalty. SMU was not a big enough school to recover.

Reportedly (by ESPN) 2012 bowl ban and 9 scholarships over 3 years. Wrists have officially been slapped to a slight red...

NCAA: Ohio State banned from postseason play next season | Buckeye Xtra Sports

The NCAA today stunned Ohio State University’s football program by banning it from postseason play after the 2012 season, multiple sources told The Dispatch.
The penalty means Ohio State automatically is out of the running for any bowl, or a Big Ten or national championship next year, just as newly appointed head coach Urban Meyer is wooing recruits to the Buckeyes.
    * Strip four more football scholarships over the next three years on top of Ohio State’s prior forfeiture of five scholarships over that span.

    * Add an additional year of probation to OSU’s self-imposed two-year probation for the football program, meaning any violations through the 2013 season could draw harsher-than-normal penalties.

Re: NCAA decision on Ohio State today

The NCAA also will hand a show-cause penalty to former head coach Jim Tressel for failing to report that some team members improperly sold memorabilia and for allowing ineligible players to compete throughout the 2010 season.

The show-cause penalty against Tressel signifies he is a serious offender and means that any NCAA school that hires him could be subject to sanctions for appointing him as football coach absent a showing it should escape penalties.

Gene Smith should have been fired as well.

I am happy he is no longer associated with ISU.
