Anyone here go to Johnny Orr's basketball camp?

If so, what years were you there? What Cyclone players do you remember being there helping? What other campers there went on to big things? What are some of your favorite memories?

I attended Johnny's camps in '85 and '86. I remember Elmer Robinson being there. Gary Thompkins was there taking summer classes prior to his freshman season but I don't remember him helping coach. I remember him being funnier than hell at the outdoor cookout on the first day. Also Kansas Jayhawk player Altonio Campbell worked at the camp. He was cool. Former Cyclone Lefty Moore was also around and was fun to be around.

There were some notable campers there:

Kendall Gill (went on to Illinois and NBA)
    Curtis Cuthpert (Iowa)
    Morgan Wheat (Vandy, ISU)

Steve Antrim and Jim Hallihan kind of ran things day to day. Johnny just hung around cracking jokes.

There were a bunch of Ames kids there that I remember used to play tennis during the downtime. Don't remember if one of them was named Fred or not.

I remember the famous Vanessa Williams Penthouse spread came out that week and got passed around the dorm. Fun times!

Re: Anyone here go to Johnny Orr's basketball camp?

I was there in the summer of 1994. Got my camp shirt signed by a bunch of players, and Johnny too. Everyone seemed to stay away from Johnny when he first showed up, but I went right over and asked him to sign my shirt. No hesitation and really nice and funny. It was a fun camp, but I don't remember any of the big HS names there. I do remember they got set aside to work with often and played an "all-star" game which was crazy fun to watch. The 'take a charge" drill was one of the more memorable parts of camp. Lots of kids who didn't protect down below.

The following year I went to UNI's PG+BigMan camp. I actually liked it a lot better for what I learned and how the camp was run. Steve Krafcisin was the main bigman instructor and the PG instructors were the guards from UNI at that time. Assigned to a team and played a ton of games in the afternoon/evenings. My team had no true post presence and we just killed teams from 3. I remember just feeling it the last day for the last two games after my dad showed up. I was always a bench guy in H.S. and didn't get many minutes nor had many "moments". But I went off in these two games. Just lights out from deep. I had to guard one kid who was easily 6+ inches taller than me. He'd post me up on one end and I'd answer on the other end. Back and forth we went for about 8 or 9 trips (a'la bird/nique), talking trash the whole time. So fun. My dad was laughing his *** off as I'd bank in crap on shots a coach would bench me for.

This is what I remember out of Johnny's ISU practices as well. That and "God Dammit, Elmer!"

Re: Anyone here go to Johnny Orr's basketball camp?

I went the years Hoiberg was a Jr. and Sr. I remember we were at the rec center the first day and Hoiberg was there running/working out. No one was listening to the coach talking, everyone was just in awe of Fred. The best was playing in the All-star game at Hilton. I will never forget scoring 6 points in Hilton then getting autographs from all the coaches and players afterwards. I still have a picture of me and Lauren Meyer, I went up to his waist.

My boy is only 4 but you can lead pipe lock him going to an ISU BB camp. It was always a dream of mine but my folks could never afford it.

I didn't go to Johnny Orr's camp.... but I did go to Muary John's back in the 70's :)
The camp was held in the old State Gym.

I was there in 1988, don't remember any big time players from that year.

Most memorable moment was sneaking in after hours and Sam Mack helped us get past the coaches!

Re: Anyone here go to Johnny Orr's basketball camp?

I think it was '86 or so when I went -my highlights were eating breakfast with Jeff Grayer (still my idol) and then hanging out quite a bit with Sam Mack. He brought a buddy and I to the dorms and we met Daryl Spinks among others playing a mean game of foosball.

Sam drove crazy -running red lights -in a brand new Grand Am. It was all fine until he brought us to practice and we were the last 2 there and Hallinan yelled at us and asked where we were. We turned around to have Sam have our back, but he was gone like a flash. We did several laps for that...

Then watched Mack take on Grayer one on one for a good 20 mins. It was make it take it and Sam hit like 5 3's to start the match. But once Grayer got the ball it was over -he would back him down and score every time, and they were going at it HARD. Good times

Re: Anyone here go to Johnny Orr's basketball camp?

Went to Johnny Orr's bball camp only once. Living in South Dakota during my high school years if was a tough trip to make. I got MVP for my grade level, got introduced and got to shake Johnny's hand as he handed out the trophy. As I walked out with my Mom, Hoiberg tapped me on the shoulder and said good job. Easily one of my best memories as a kid growing up. Remember Hoiberg being in a walking boot at the time too.

Re: Anyone here go to Johnny Orr's basketball camp?

I attended somewhere around '87 or '88. I remember Troy Skinner and Brian Pearson being there. I remember Ron Harris being one of the counselors.

But my most vivid memory is the dunk contest there. There was a guy named Derwin Webb there...he went on to play at Louisville. He jumped over a guy and dunked, which was not a common dunk back then. I was in awe. I just looked the guy up and he's now an attorney in Louisville.

Was there in '93. great time, other than not getting to play in Hilton, stupid flooding. My team won the JR High championship, even got my picture with Johnny holding my trophy! I remember seeing different players, but can't remember who we all ran into.

I went to the summer 1988 camp too. There was one big time player there I think, but he was just finishing his freshman year of high school...
