    O.T. Scam preying on women?

I went to the women's expo a couple of weekends ago. I signed up for a "free" trip. (I know, I know, nothing is free.) But, let me know what you think of me sending them this e-mail.

I entered a "contest" put on by your company at the Des Moines Women's Expo, Des Moines, IA. After walking into the expo, there was a booth to sign up for a free trip. Yesterday, October 1, I received a call telling me that I had won the free trip. The phone rep went on to tell me that I had to pay $299 per person for the "free" trip to exclude me from any gift tax. I let the phone rep know that the gift tax amount is $12,000 per person for the 2007 year. So, there would be no reason that this trip would cause any gift tax. He said he had never had anyone tell him that and that he was going to talk to his manager regarding this.

Funny thing is my friend who was with me also "won" the "free" trip as well.

I would hate to think that your company is praying on Women. You may want to re-think the gift tax story that your reps are giving to people.

I have lodged a complaint with the Women's Expo. I will be filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, but would like your comments before I go that far.

    Thank you,

Just in case you didn't know... I'm a girl.

complete scam. this is a popular way to steal money. good for you on writing to the Women's Expo and the BBB. But you need to include the State AG, local police and maybe a news crew or two.... so more 'winners' know about this.

    Seems like that, Brian.

I think the e-mail looks good. It's not just a woman thing though, we've encountered this a few times.

They are a timeshare company (Blue Green Corp.). But at the Expo, they were just promoting a free trip to Bermuda. I didn't know at the time they were a timeshare.

I would say that 90% of people walking in signed up. The workers taking the tickets pretty much guided you right to the booth after you walk in. Also, some local companies were doing legitimate give-a-ways.

The idea of a time share freaks me out. For some people it works, but I have heard more bad stories than good.

Re: O.T. Scam praying on women?

YOu would not pay them the tax anyway. Taxes are paid to the government. So if you excepted the Free trip. You would claim that on your taxes and they would send you a form. Not sure the form number but it would be like a 1099 or something like that. So I think it's a complete scam.

Their claim was that that it would not be seen as a gift b/c of the payment of $299 per person. They weren't saying it was paying the tax, they were saying it would avoid any tax. Does that make sense? It has already been a long day and it isn't even 10 yet.

Hopefully this isn't some kind of religious scam if they're "praying on women"

Ok, maybe the "big laugh smiley" was a little much...

Stay away from it. It is nothing you want to go to even if their are women there. I got dragged to one of those baby expos! OMG talk about pain!

Timeshares don't freak me out. You can end up with a pretty good vacation, for free, if you attend a sales seminar. granted, it can take 2-3 hours and they will ask you one hundred times to purchase a time share... but if you can say no, it is an easy vacation. You must be carful, that you don't pay anything upfront.. those are typically scams. I have been to a few and usually only have to pay for the airfare and get a 3-5 night stay out of the deal.

I stopped listening and asking questions after I explained to him that his gift tax spiel was crap. I don't think that it was included.
