    2012 Passing Game

While every team, certainly ISU, has numerous things to work on during spring practice, the key to the Clones moving up in the world is improving the passing game. The Big 12 stats for conference games only show that ISU was ranked 7th in passing offense, and LAST in passing efficiency.

Before each of the 3 Rhoads seasons, Clone fans (including myself) have expressed hope that the passing game would really take off in the fall, only to be disappointed. This upcoming year, we have the departure of Tom Herman to contend with in addition to the usual questions (e.g. talent at QB, talent at receiver, pass protection, coaching adequacy).

Will this be the year that the passing game finally breaks out, and Iowa State moves up in the rankings?

I disagree...we can win and win big with the 7th best passing attack if the defense continues to improve at the rate it has and we have a solid running game.

    Re: 2012 Passing Game

IMO, we are back to square one. There will be a new OC, which means a new offense, new terminology, new plays, etc, etc. Sure it will be a spread, but there are so many versions of the spread out there that it will take some time to learn from whomever the new OC is.

Also, with the new offense comes new opportunities at QB. Barnett has played well, but not great. Jantz has had some time to heal and get his head straightened out, and Sam Richardson will be in the fold come this spring. A new QB competition is on the horizon.

Reynolds and Darks are gone, so that leaves 2 holes to fill for starting spots. Lenz is the most experienced receiver we have left and Gary has shown great progress late in the year. West has also done some pretty good things, but we can't forget the new WR's that will be coming off red shirt.

As of right now, there are too many questions again this spring to know what we will have as far as the passing attack goes.

Disagree about being back to square one.

    Re: 2012 Passing Game

Honestly, the clock control ground game might be the way to go. We have a lot of talent at RB and some good depth in the OL. We had the ball for 40 minutes against Tech and beat them 41-7 with 368 rushing yards and only 144 passing yards. The defense was well rested and made big plays; very different from other games, especially Missouri. Let's see more of that against the great offenses in the Big 12.

We would win big with the worst passing offense in country if we had the NFL All-Pro defense and running back.

To win more games we need an offense that our defense is not forced to overcome. We will not win 9+ games with an offense last in passing efficiency or 7th in passing offense.

    Re: 2012 Passing Game

2012 passing will be based on QB. If its Jantz, they will have the ability to have more of a passing attack even though they should still be a running team. If its Barnett, we are a running team.

    Re: 2012 Passing Game

The passing game definitely needs to improve. The Cyclones are one of ten FBS schools that finished with fewer than 6.0 yards per pass attempt. ISU's 5.7 yards per pass attempt puts us at 113th in the country.

Joining us in the bottom ten of that statistic are Maryland, Ole Miss, Memphis, Idaho, Akron, Kent State, Florida Atlantic, UNLV, and Kentucky. Those teams have a combined record of 22-86, or about a 20% winning percentage.

    Re: 2012 Passing Game

A lot of the reason that ISU is so bad in the passing game is that they probably lead the nation in dropped passes. Also, Barnett is just not very accurate, period. He had several chances to complete long pass plays and just plan missed guys. I love what the guy does with the read option, but he needs to do a better job with his arm. It would help to have a couple guys that can catch everything like Blackmon at OSU.

    Re: 2012 Passing Game

I agree that passing is important but our bread and butter is running the ball and always have been at ISU. We need a spread option OC who thinks run first and pass second after the run is well established. Make the opposition bring 7-8 into the box and then throw it over their heads or out to the edges while the defense occupies the center trying to stuff the run. Every team in the Big 12 is geared towards stopping the pass with the number of pass heavy teams in the league. Go against the grain and run it down their throats.

Just look how much it hurt landry Jones when broyles got hurt. I don't think he's thrown a touchdown pass since.

    Re: 2012 Passing Game

Next season will likely be similar to this year for the offense. I think 2013 is when our offense will finally take off. By then we should have a veteran group with a wealth of experience. Next year the offense will still be fairly young and inexperienced. Receiver seems like a position still trying to find itself.

    Re: 2012 Passing Game

Run the ball early and often.
Run the ball until the lighter and more pass equipped defenses vomit on the sideline from taking 7-8 Woody domes in the gut, then when you have beat the snot out of them and they have been on the field for 6 minutes, gash them with whatever pass plays you want to.....like someone else commented earlier in the post...the big12 defenses are equipped to stop speed, and pass happy teams....beat the %&*# out of them with running backs keep the clock on our side, and the defense rested. Win Win Win.
