    Something I'd like to see

Pass the ball up the court rather than dribble it. Seems like we are content to let the defense set up, and in particular, Iowa's half court trap, by dribbling up the floor instead of passing it. Even with dribbling, I think pushing the pace a bit more would have helped prevent the defense from setting up, and there were opportunities under the basket (especially with Ejim) if we were looking to fast break.

I agree, we did a poor job against the press. Can someone besides White bring the ball up? I think he might be better from one of the flanks on the press. His height and ball skills should avoid that trap better.

Makes me question our guard's ball handling skills.

I think we tryed doing this a few times last night, but the ball got deflected or picked off by Iowa. Need to practice it a bit more I think.

Re: Something I'd like to see

Cyclones were very intentional about letting Royce get pinned in the corner - when the trap came, the best passer on the team was able to pass out of (over) the double-team to the open man, who would then shoot or kick to the next open man while the Hawk D tried to get back. It resulted in quite a few open looks.

Re: Something I'd like to see

I think it really showed in the second half when it seemed like we were trying to run the clock out with still 4 or 5 minutes left. I'd like to see us push it more as well, but as Clones21 eluded to it got deflected a couple times and it seemed they didn't wanna risk it anymore.

I thought we did a TERRIBLE job against the press last night. They kept getting stuck in the corner of the half court line. Even when we were past that point on the court we would go back to it!!! There had to be someon open on the baseline to pass it to.

We were entirely too passive against the press last night. I would love anything that suggests a sense of urgency.

Re: Something I'd like to see

I thought the passing was fine. Noticed some nice bounce passes which is something ISU never has seemed to do much of.

Where we passed it was the problem. Not sure why we passed to the edge so much vs the center of the court.

I wasn't there, but this is what I could gather from Clone Zone. They were covering the ball side baseline guy pretty well, so it had to be the man on the opposite baseline side (usually Booker, Ejim, or Gibson) that was open, but to get a good angle on a pass from half court they would have to come out to the opposite wing. If you can make that pass you can occasionally get a 3 on 2 situation, but a 3 on 2 situation where Booker, Ejim, or Gibson is leading it from the wing is not really an advantage for us.

I suspect if we put our big on the ball side, they would have allowed the pass to the baseline and trapped our big there.

We could've put our press-break liability, our non-White big, near the center of the court near the top of the key. If he gets the ball, they can't trap him very well there anyway, but then he's part of your 3-2 attacking the basket and you don't want that anyway.

Anyway...MORAL OF THE STORY...this is why have having a bruiser that can't pass or dribble well is overrated.

    This all means nothing.
The game was over 15 minutes in. It needed the mercy rule because we couldn't stay interested in playing.

I'm glad they exposed us on the press; we definitely need to work on it.

Re: Something I'd like to see

Ever since the beginning of the year when we saw Royce playing point a lot of the time I've been worried about teams pressing us. Bubu is probably our best handling guard and it did not look good with him trying to bring the ball up the court. Royce still bringing the ball up during the press also says a lot about are guards handling ability.

With White's passing ability, you'd think he could provide some excellent outlet passes - much like Kevin Love used to do for UCLA. It sure sets up some easy buckets and keeps the opposing team honest on getting back on D....with the bonus of preventing some offensive rebounds for them.
