    Marlins...where's the $$ coming from??

Miami has already spent $191 million on free agency this off-season, grabbing such players as Jose Reyes, Heath Bell and Mark Beurhle (just signed today), they still have an active offer out to Pujols, while extending a new, 6-year offer to CJ Wilson. All this from an organization that has spent less in free agency over the last 14 years...COMBINED!!

I thought we were still in the middle of an economic crisis, and the last I knew, only 4-5 organizations even turn a profit on a consistent basis (I think this is BS BTW). Have to wonder if Miami and Colombia are once again joined at the hip. I mean, seriously, where's it coming from??

darrenrovell: I've asked 3 baseball execs where all the Marlins $ was coming from. All 3 said it must be owner (Loria) counting on big $ from new stadium.

"We embrace that challenge and what it presents to us. Im going to approach all 12 games this way: Were going to win them all. If we prepare and then go out and execute, were going to win all 12. Now how many are we going to end up with at the end of the year? I dont know, and youre right, I wont put a number on it."- Paul Rhoads on having the toughest schedule in the Big 12

Lots of places....collecting and saving MLB revenue.....future money from local TV contracts, which they will try to get better rates on with all the new talent....increased season ticket sales from the talent and new stadium. They might win in the short term and with then blow it up and trade all the talent away....

They haven't spent **** in their existence, so they've been hoarding their money for a while. They are probably hoping that fans will show up to their new stadium if they spend.

Re: Marlins...where's the $$ coming from??

Has to be from the expected revenue from the opening of the new stadium. Similar to the same way the Twins were able to give Joe Mauer the big contract a couple of months before they even opened Target Field for the first time.

"Collecting and saving" what revenue? I'll bet if you were to look at past seasons, they are not reporting profits, and probably one of the loudest ******** about revenue sharing. They haven't "saved" anything...at least they aren't reporting it, which would be illegal.

Re: Marlins...where's the $$ coming from??

In 2001, only 5 organizations reported an operating profit, after taxes. I know, that's 10 years ago. Forbes reported all but 2 organizations reported a profit in 2010 (Diamondbacks and Tigers lost money), but they did NOT consider profits after tax, so the number is lower than what Forbes reports.

For the record, the Marlins were the most profitable team, according to Forbes, in 2010 at just over $40M.

banking on the money they think they will get from ticket sales. all these deals are extremely back loaded so if the money doesn't come, they blow it up and trade the talent away

Also changing their name from Florida to Miami gave them some money.

Makes sense to bank on those always reliable Miami sports fans to fill seats.
