Should Penn State get the Death Penalty?

I was listening to AM 1600, and there was a tidbit from Mike Hlass(Sp?) who said he has taken some calls asking why this hasn't been discussed. Also talked about how this could take up to 25 years to recover from, and that BIG should consider booting them from the conference.

At first glance, I think these are all a little far-fetched and probably will not happen. But it does bring up some interesting conversations. Who can PSU realistically get to fill this HC position? And why would anyone take this job right now? Next, this is going to get very ugly as this individual goes to trial, and the media coverage will be less than flattering for PSU and the BIG. We already saw them strip Paterno's name from the Championship Trophy to try and disassociate from them. How will this go over with the conference and all the negative attention it draws. Finally I do think when this goes to trial, even more detail will come forth on the cover-up that occurred within Penn State. To me if this was ignored to protect the "prestige" of a program then the death penalty is well warranted. I just wanted to see what everyone thought about these penalties and possibilities.

I would have no problem with the Death Penalty if it comes out PSU truly knew about this and covered it up. This to me is worse than paying players like SMU.

So there is a possibilty that the football program gets death, and that sick **** Sandusky gets to live? Absurd.

If anyone should get the death penalty it should be ol' Sandusky himself.

Re: Should Penn State get the Death Penalty?

Personally, I believe the so called "death penalty" should be used more often. Wanna stop this kind of stuff from happening? Then make it not worth it for schools to do stuff like cover-ups, lying, cheating, etc.

I think they should get a 1 year football death penalty along with Miami (for the scandal that everyone seems to have forgotten about now). I think it is baloney that centers for higher education can get away with this type of stuff. The cheating and cover ups won't stop as long as it is more profitable to do it and then deal with the consequences.

That said, they will never kick them out of the Big 10, and I don't think anyone will ever get the death penalty again, especially a big name school like Penn State or Miami. Now if this was going on at say, Tulsa, Houston, etc. Yep, they'd be dead meat just to make an example...

Yep, this thread has just been pwned.

Re: Should Penn State get the Death Penalty?

    1) Why should current and future players be punished for this? They had nothing to do with this. Those that knew about this and didn't do a damn thing have been dealt with and punished (or will be.)

    2) The death penalty cannot happen. A school's program must be on sanction under the NCAA for major violation and commit another major violation within a 5-year period of being placed under sanction for the death penalty to be possible to hand down. The way how people throw around that the death penalty should be handed down on a program, it kind of amazes me more people are not somewhat aware of this.

    1. If you are worried about punishing players, give them exempted transfers (can play immediately for the school they transfer to) like they did with the "clean" SMU players. But I don't feel for any new staff that were hired at Penn St - it's not like we're 5-10 years removed from this scandal, we're not even 5-10 WEEKS removed from it. Any new staff knew what kind of firestorm they were walking into, so no, I don't feel for them.

    2. Sure a death penalty can happen. Rules can be changed.

Wish they would go ahead and give the death penalty to PSU, tOSU, Alabama, USC, Auburn and anyone else that is caught with some type of recruiting scandal.

Would be the best thing with college football and would even things around the NCAA. Wake me up the first time they give the death penalty to a team that generates millions though... not sure what they would have to do to get it.

Shut down the athletic department for a few years. Let teams currently in season finish their seasons. Players can either stay at PSU and have their scholarship honored buy the university, or transfer without penalty. This goes beyond just football...they have had problems with other sports too.

Will it happen? No...too much money is involved.

Agreed. The main reason that's been thrown out there why they "can't" do it again, is how devastating it was for SMU, and how they never recovered from it. The problem is, it was particularly devastating for them not because of the penalty alone, but because they were nothing without the cheating, so when the cheating went away, they never recovered because the cheating stopped.

A school like OSU, Penn State, Miami, etc, they get it, and yes, itll hurt, and maybe they have trouble being elite, but they still have the fanbase and alumni (and their donors) that can legally contribute enough that they will still rise back towards the top again.

Sports by Brooks has a source that says Paterno's health is going down rapidly, and this will probably be his last Christmas.

Not a fan of recruiting scandals and trading-bowl-game-crap-for-tats....but PSU is on a whole different level. Not even close to a fair comparison.

No they shouldn't because it had nothing to do with competition. There are other more appropriate punishments.
