Annual if there was a playoff thread

I know myself and others have always been a proponent of this playoff scenario, so I jotted down what it may look like last night.

    • 16 team playoff
    • Includes the 11 conference champions and 5 at-larges
    • At-larges are the 5 HIGHEST rated BCS teams who did not win their conference, and there is no limit to how many a conference can have.
    • Seating is based off BCS rank
    • First round played at the higher seed's home
    • Second round either played at neutral bowl locations or high seeds home
    • Third round and championship game played at neutral location

Here what it would look like this year...

1 LSU (SEC champ, BCS #1)

    16 L. Tech (WAC Champ)

    8 K-State (at-large, BCS #8)

    9 Wisconsin (Big 10 champ, BCS #9)

    5 Oregon (Pac 12 champ, BCS #5)

    12 S. Miss (C-USA Champ, BCS #21)

    4 Stanford (at-large, BCS #4)

13 West Virginia (Big East Champ, BCS #23)

    6 Arkansas (at-large, BCS #6)

11 TCU (Mountain West Champ, BCS #18)

3 Ok. State (Big 12 Champ, BCS #3)

14 N. Illinois (Mid American Champ)

    7 Boise State (at-large, BCS #7)

10 Clemson (ACC Champ, BCS #14)

    2 Bama (at-large, BCS #2)

15 Ark. State (Sun Belt Champ)

With as screwy as the bcs rank is, I don't know that I trust it one bit for anything. Other than that, I like this.

I'm not sure what would be better for choosing at-large teams. A committee like in basketball?

South Carolina wouldn't be happy, but that's ok with me. To make this work better the conferences would need to be a bit better balanced. Arkansas State vs Alabama would be a terrible game, as well as LSU vs. La Tech.

But that's very similar to how basketball is, and it works there. Every so often you might get your Hampton.

I agree. And perhaps just by having this system conferences would become more balanced... who knows.

    I like it.

I'm sure if playoffs happen, they'll be "sheepish" and use 4 or maybe 8 teams ... I say if it's done, 16 is the way to go, in similar fashion to this.

Specific to this year's "field," we could definitely see second-round upsets Boise/Clemson over Alabama or Arkansas over OSU.

At least we'd see it happen and not guess about it.

Re: Annual if there was a playoff thread

If I were filling out a bracket, here's mine
    Second round
    1 LSU
    8 K-State
    5 Oregon
    4 Stanford
    11 TCU
    3 OSU
    10 Clemson
    2 Alabama

    1 LSU
    5 Oregon
    3 OSU
    2 Alabama

    1 LSU
    3 OSU

    3 OSU

One detail I'd consider if I were running the show on the 16-team format might put in stipulation against rematch in first two rounds (such as Oregon-Stanford) similar to NCAA bball tournament unless it is unavoidable. That might require flipping Stanford to a 6 or Oregon to a 3 (so OSU could get screwed even in this system, if it was set up that way)

Re: Annual if there was a playoff thread

I think maybe there should be play-in games, and First Round Bye. Or take it down to 10 teams with the Play In Games. The tiny conferences should not get an equal shot, but they should still have a shot. And they should reevaluate every few years to see if a conference has moved up or down to become worthy of a Play-In or regular spot.

    Play In:
Sun Belt (Ark St) vs WAC (L. Tech)
MID American (NIU) vs Conf USA (S. Miss)

1 LSU (SEC champ, BCS #1)
    16 Bye

    8 K-State (at-large, BCS #8)
    9 Wisconsin (Big 10 champ, BCS #9)

    5 Oregon (Pac 12 champ, BCS #5)
12 West Virginia (Big East Champ, BCS #23)

    4 Stanford (at-large, BCS #4)
    13 Play-In Winner

    6 Arkansas (at-large, BCS #6)
11 TCU (Mountain West Champ, BCS #18)

3 Ok. State (Big 12 Champ, BCS #3)
    14 Play-In Winner

    7 Boise State (at-large, BCS #7)
10 Clemson (ACC Champ, BCS #14)

    2 Bama (at-large, BCS #2)
    15 Bye

Play In (Last Wekend in November)=Home game based on BCS ranking
First Round(First Weekend of December)=Home Game based on BCS Ranking
Second Round(Last Week of December)=Regional Game/Premier Bowls not in Final 4 Rotation, preferences given based on BCS Ranking
Final 4/Championship(First Week of January)=Rotates between premier Bowl Destinations.

Play in Games and Championship week would be the last week of November (So you can't have At Large in Play In Games). You could also reseed every round too, If you wanted to give the big boys more advantage. Also can keep some of the warm weather Bowl games for the non-qualifiers.

I don't have my Kindle with me, but this looks very similar to what the authors of a book I downloaded called "Death to the BCS" proposed. I like it very much.

Easier solutiion: 8-team playoff with conference champs only. Use BCS algorithm to seed top 8 conference champs. 1st round games at Top 4 seeds the first weekend in December. No games during Semester Finals. Two semi-final games on New Year's Day at rotating Bowl venues with Final game a 7-10 days later at another Bowl Venue.

    (8) West Virginia at (1) LSU
    (5) Clemson at (4) Wisconsin
    (7) Southern Miss at (2) Oklahoma State
    (6) TCU at (3) Oregon

Only teams that can ***** about being left out are Northern Illinois, LA Tech and Arkansas State. Current bowl system remains intact as loser of first round games and all other eligible team play in bowl games during the Holidays BAU.

Assuming top seeds win 1st round games:

    (4) Wisconsin vs (1) LSU at Sugar Bowl
    (3) Oregon vs (2) Oklahoma St at Rose Bowl

    (2) Oklahoma St vs (1) LSU at Orange or Fiesta Bowl

Love this except for the fact that the top 2 teams would not play for a month, and then have a tough opponent. But I guess that Alabama and LSU won't play for over a month as it is now.

This doesn't really solve the Alabama argument. I could see teams wanting to go to weaker conferences to get a better shot at a title.

What Alabama argument? Win the conference or you're out. Best system is to decide matters on the field and this playoff system does that for the most part.

If schools want to go to a weaker conference for much less TV revenue, let them be idiots and do it. They would be idiots like Mizzou and Aggy going to the SEC for more TV money and becoming less competitive and relevant.

All conference champions don't deserve a shot. Should be reserved for the top conferences only, and the rest at large based solely on the final rankings.
