MCC names former Cyclone Lacey interim volunteer head coach

MARSHALLTOWN – Marshalltown Community College has named Alison Lacey as the interim volunteer head coach for their women’s basketball program. Lacey, a 4-year starter at Iowa State University, was the 10th overall draft pick in the 2010 WNBA draft, selected by the Seattle Storm. In that season the Seattle Storm won the WNBA championship. Lacey looks forward to working with the MCC team this season.

    How about this:

MCC head coach Larry Roberts was recently placed on administrative leave pending an NJCAA investigation.

Best of luck to Aus, would love to see her on our bench someday.

I can't say I've really followed the story on Roberts, but supposedly he isn't allowed on campus. I've also heard there are three major violations. That's all from word of mouth though. We all know how much rumors are worth.

"I want a TEAM," she said. "I was always part of a good team. Individually we might have been that good but as a team we were good, so that's definitely something I'm going to bring in to this team and hopefully everyone will buy into it and we'll be just fine."

Here's the link from Marshalltown's Times-Republican of the full article on Lacey.

I'm happy for Aus. This is some good news. Glad to hear she is back in the state.

Interim volunteer? Do you even exist if you are an interim volunteer?

Before they had something like the trainer's brother coaching. The investigation is very serious. I would assume Roberts won't be consider the coach much longer. It will be interesting to see where this situation goes from here.

Who is MCC's AD? I know it used to be Kraft but she retired, right? They had to forfeit the entire soccer season a couple years ago because of violations IIRC.

Not sure who the AD is. Kraft did retire/step down. Yes, MCC soccer had a problem a few years ago. I believe 2008? They actually got in trouble two years in a row, I believe. I remember people thinking, didn't they get in trouble last year? It was hard to believe after getting in trouble once that you wouldn't be extra careful the next time.

Marcelo, a former forward for the Tigers, was the head coach. Junior college soccer is allowed 4 athletic scholarships for non-U.S. citizens, and that was violated under Marcelo. They had something like 20 kids from Brazil. I'm not sure if they were all on scholarship, but a high majority were. Interestingly enough, I've heard he's now an assistant coach for one of the youth Brazilian national teams.

Right now I belive MCC is the process of hiring a new AD to replace the one that left after Craft. Coach Craft left on her own for her own personal reasons that had nothing to do with any NJCAA violations. Getting coach lacey was a great pick up for the school to be able to have a female with her basketball abilities in their program. Being able to start her coaching career at a JUCO like MCC will be a great way to start a coaching career.

The head coach is on paid leave. If the assistant has other jobs that make it impossible to be a long-term interim head coach, a volunteer interim head coach is about the only option they have. Lacey may have agreed to this to audition for the "real" job if/when the current head coach is fired or resigns and MCC can hire a new one.

Also, considering that Lacey is not a US Citizen, she will have to clear some paperwork to get to work in the US. If her status is "volunteer" that means she can start working immediately without having to apply to paperwork first.

Yeah that school is going downhill fast, I'm sure they were/are. They give everyone money. It might not be a athletic scholarship, but it will be some bogus no name scholarship that they'll award them. I was going to do stats for the baseball team and they said, "We'll get you money somehow." I know some of the stuff that are probably violations, but I probably should not say on here. Happy for Lacey though!

Good point. She's looking for work last I knew, so she's probably only here on a tourist visa. I'm not sure how that all works.
