Word on the "Whirlybird" from JP

I sent an e-mail to JP about the whole "Whirlybird" Cy logo. It looks like it's only being removed from the unis, not completely from the Athletic department:

    JP's response to my e-mail:
Nobody said we were getting rid of the CY logo only that we were not going to use it as our primary logo - much like the schools you listed. For example, at Wisconsin, the Motion W is their primary logo and that is what is on their helmets, their football field and their basketball court. However they still have Bucky Badger.

The new Iowa State logo will be our primary logo for the athletics department. If you read our release or listen to our press conference, we did not say we were getting rid of Cy.

    Thanks.
    (my e-mail)
I just have a concern about the complete disappearance of the Cy logo. I understand the need for a more simplistic and universal athletic mark, especially for a football helmet. Initially I was opposed to it, but seeing the statistics and the new look it has grown on me. You mentioned that 70% of BCS schools use their helmet logo as their main athletic mark, and that's fine with me. But I did a little research myself (google image search), and 52of the 65, or 80%, have a "mascot" logo, such as Wisconsin's "Bucky Badger," Iowa's "Herky the Hawkeye," Oklahoma St's "cowboy," even Alabama's "elephant" logo (not as their primary logo, but as a minor form for merchandising and marketing), including (including us for this year) 9 of the Big XII schools and all of the Pac 10 and SEC schools. Below the e-mail I'll list the schools I found with a mascot logo.

There are quite a few of us that still like the "whirlybird Cy" logo and would like it kept in some capacity, using either the "punching Cy" or the "defensive pose Cy" as a mascot logo. I could even see some of the colors being changed out of it, the majority of the blue replaced with "deep shaded" cardinal and golds found in the I-State logo (although the face would need to remain either blue or black as I've yet to see a cardinal that didn't have a blue-black face ;) ). Those are just some ideas I had as someone who's been connected to Iowa State since my acceptance letter came in 1995 (yes, I was there for awhile) and it's really the only logo that I've ever associated with and I would hate to see it disappear completely.

Once again, thank you for all the work you've done, and I look forward to where your Master Plan brings Iowa State in the upcoming years.

Did you know what the "N" on the Nebraska helmet stands for?

It's great that JP takes the time to answer his email, but it's got to get old having to read and reply to rambling emails like this one about non-issues like keeping Cy as a mascot. No one has even suggested that Cy was going anywhere.

Actually, I heard something just like that through the grapevine, so somewhere along the lines somebody either must have been misinformed or understood incorrectly and spread the message.

Re: Word on the "Whirlybird" from JP

I've never seen Tennessee use anything other than the "power T" that is on their helmets as a logo. They have Smokey the Dog as a mascot, but I've never seen a logo with a dog (or a volunteer, for that matter) used, at least officially or in a while, for Tennessee. I'm guessing Cy will play a larger role than Smokey does for UT.....

....now if we could only get Cy to do this to a Hawkeye.

Re: Word on the "Whirlybird" from JP

My biggest concern is the relative constant change. ISU hires Mac and the logo changes. ISU hires Chizik and the logo changes. While I know that football caoches and athletic directors will always be influential, they need to realize that they are not larger than the university. I was there at the time that the previous logo changed and we were all thrilled at the fact that we had something that blended the university's nickname and mascot, but at the same time it struck me as odd that they could just change everything so suddenly. My ISU stuff now consists of 2 different logos, which drives me nuts - I have no desire to add the third (I will buy all the clearance whirlybird stuff I can in the summer). Our local OU friends struggle to understand the constant identity crisis at Iowa State and I'm not even sure what to tell them anymore.

I suppose I can always show them our campanile photo and tell them that they still haven't replaced that one...

honestly, just let it go. Things are in motion - stop wasting JPs time with stuff that will not change.

Ok not to be a d!ck but come on.... I have never seen any of those logos. And why do we even care. He has more important things going on. Also in his press conference he said "Cy is NOT GOING ANYWHERE". Why can't we take his word and not waste his time on this. Do you see logos with herky on them... NO CAUSE NO ONE CARES... Time to move on and grow up..

Re: Word on the "Whirlybird" from JP

I barely remember this logo being used....

Grew up with this logo being used...

Went to college with this logo in place....

    Just adopted this logo...

I'm sick of the logo changing all the time... I don't mind the whirly bird logo but it was too busy. The marching Cy has nothin to do with the Cyclones and neither does the I-State. But I thnk the I state looks sweet and has a chance to last a long time and actually bring us team and brand recognition.

Yes, they exist and can be found on the internet, but who has ever seen these logos used? Nobody.
