    Christmas gift for wife

I'm completely torn. My wife said she would love an ipad for christmas. The Asus transformer prime is coming out in a couple of weeks. It's the same price and pretty much kills the ipad in every aspect. She has an android phone so it shouldn't be real hard to use. What do you think?

If she doesn't like it you can always return it and get the ipad2 latter. It will integrate with her phone easier.

I said screw it and told her what I was going to do. I told her she could have an Ipad2 instead if she wanted it. I told her all the specs and the only thing she said was "why does everyone I know that has a tablet have an Ipad?".

Because Apple has brainwashed the entire electronics consumer market.

What is she going to use it for? Don't get too caught up in hardware specs and features that she may have no interest in.

You can make toast in a toaster oven plus do a bunch more stuff. But if all you want is toast, a toaster is just better and easier. An iPad is a toaster.

But its not like an android tablet is a toaster oven. Theyre both pretty easy to use (ive used both). She's already familiar with android, so its not like it should be a completely unfamiliar environment.

I'm thinking i may order a transformer prime myself when they release (word is Dec 8)

Realistically speaking, Apple simplified the electronics market for most people. You pay more but "worry less." Wether you believe that or not is your own pejorative, but the fact that you post on a message board puts your technical inclination in the top 10% right off the bat. Some people don't WANT to look up specs or learn how to use something that's more versatile.

P.S. Be sure to let us know what you buy and how it works out for you!

Don't pay extra money for an apple that someone has clearly taken a bite out of, maybe for a full apple, but don't let them trick you.

I see why they get so much credit for the iphone on this.

But tablets? They basically blew up the iphone os onto a bigger screen. No widgets to take advantage of the larger screen space, etc. Android's tablet version (honeycomb) was designed specifically as a tablet OS.

But you can't design something specifically as a tablet OS without a preconceived bias of what "tablet" means.

I don't even know if it is fair to compare an iPad and an Android tablet like you do PC vs. Mac, Windows vs. Linux, iPhone vs. Android phone. In a lot of ways they are not 2 alternate ways to do the same thing but rather 2 tools to do 2 different sets of jobs. It just so happens those 2 job sets have a pretty large overlap.

It's pretty admirable that you think your wife is going to do more with the tablet than check facebook, play angry birds & maybe scrabble . Thats pretty much what the women I know with ipads do. I'm buying my wife one for christmas to keep her off my laptop.

That rug really tied the room together, did it not dude?

    Re: Christmas gift for wife

I'd recommend that you get her what she asked for, unless you can find a nonchalant way of discussing the advantages of the other one and convince her that it's a better choice. Otherwise, depending on her temperament, she may see it as you telling her that her choice was wrong (as I said, it depends on how tightly she is wound).
