    Rhoads speech on Gill's situation

Iowa State Coach Paul Rhoads Weighs In On Turner Gill's Firing From Kansas - SB Nation Kansas City

Rhoads believes Gill deserved more time than the two years that Kansas gave him.

"I think its bad for our profession. Especially in the sport of football, with so many bodies and such a philosophy to build and all the development that takes place," Rhoads said. "Were in our third year here and were just now starting to see the physical differences needed to compete in that league."

Just developed a man crush on this guy!

Plus if Gill wasn't good, Rhoads is going to win more games against KU lol.

I think Kansas made a huge mistake. They should have given him at least one more year.

He almost has to say that but he's also correct.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

Re: Rhoads speech on Gill's situation

    He's a bit biased being a coach.

There's bad and needing time to improve, and being historically bad, even for kansas. Gill was the latter. It wasnt just that he lost, but that he lost in spectactular fashion. 2 years in CPR wasnt winless against current conference members. He wasnt losing half his games by over 30 points each (in fact in year 1, he won 6 in the regular season and had 3 losses of 10 points or less).

Re: Rhoads speech on Gill's situation

Not giving Gill more than two years is just like not willing to give Chizik more than two years at Iowa State. I know the DB left after a couple of years on his own but I believe we gave him an extension or something so he would stay at the time.

Kansas and Iowa State are two very similar grounds historically (minus Mangino era). You just can't expect a sure success with anyone in less than 3 years.

There's a difference between expecting sure success and expecting something other than complete and total failure.

I totally agree. However, Gill might have had bad OC and DC that he could reshuffle and work something out for year 3. I know how ugly he lost some of these games but he put up a HUGE fight at the ISU game in Ames. In fact, we are lucky we won that day.

Re: Rhoads speech on Gill's situation

You will NEVER hear one coach agree with the firing of another coach. A lot of coaches had a lot of nice things to say about Greg McDermott

With that said, Kansas was historically bad this year. And it's not like Gill took over a bad program. They are 4-5 years removed from an Orange Bowl win. Mangino recruited well there. The talent is pretty decent.

Re: Rhoads speech on Gill's situation

It sounds like the Big 12 basketball coaches that were practically begging for Pollard not to fire McDoormat in 2010 by saying what a great coach he was, how he needed more time, etc. The bottom line is that these guys are self-interested and they knew that as long as McDoormat was at ISU, success would never follow.

I'm not necessarily saying CPR has a similar motive here, but all of these coaches know that there job depends on winning which requires other schools losing.
