Squawk Freshmen Can't Talk to the Media

Not sure if this was posted yet, sorry if it was:

Sounds to me like Kirky knows he has a bunch of thugs in his program and is covering his arse.

Re: Squawk Freshmen Can't Talk to the Media

He has always made freshman off limits to the media, and now this year he extended that to redshirt freshman. I think it's just his policy, I highly doubt it has anything to do with the character of the kids.

He had a quote earlier this week where he said this was his team with the most character he's ever had.

Re: Squawk Freshmen Can't Talk to the Media

They were talking about this on Cotlar this morning. I don't blame them at all. Some reporters will try to stir up and story out of nothing, and ask leading questions. It takes a certain level of maturity to handle that. Larry was calling it censorship. My question for Larry would be.....say a reporter wants to do a story on KXNO. Would you allow them to interview whoever they choose to interview in the building? That new secretary? The janitor? That guy with the perpetually crappy attitude? No, a company will want to pick and choose who is going to speak, and represent them publicly. Same thing.

Re: Squawk Freshmen Can't Talk to the Media

The only people who are really up in arms over this are the media themselves (ie Randy Petersen and Larry - mr censorship - Kotlar). Why? Because now they can't right what they want to write (insert whiny, cry baby voice here).

    Most fans could care less.

Eh, freshmen say stupid stuff, and provide bulletin board material (Vandervelde).

I think it's a good policy - and most coaches have a policy similar to this.

Re: Squawk Freshmen Can't Talk to the Media

I don't have a problem with it really, but I think it gets kind of rediculous if you have true freshman or redshirt freshman who are starters and playing prominent roles and don't allow them to represent your team. How can they be leaders if you don't trust them to talk to anyone? They should be able to handle the leading questions and know not to say stupid things by their second year in the program.

Re: Squawk Freshmen Can't Talk to the Media

Actually, having a policy of not letting freshmen speak to the media is quite common around the country. Most of the big-time FB programs (LSU, for example) not only keep the freshmen off limits to the media, they actually have them take courses in public speaking, answering questions, personal conduct, etc. Really quite smart to do since "kids say the darndest things sometimes".

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.
