Post When 'Husker recruit chooses ISU, things can get messy *updated*

    DesMoinesRegister.com

Ames, Ia. - Crossing the border made Phillip Bates a target.

As a quarterbacking prodigy from Omaha, Bates faced the most difficult choice of his teenage athletic life: Iowa State or Nebraska?

When he announced his decision to play college football in Ames, there were immediate consequences.

It started with a little trash talking, and before Bates knew it, he was one of the most talked-about guys on talk radio. He remembers friends setting fire to a Cyclones media guide in front of his locker. Even his grandmother felt compelled to defend him to her neighbors.

The message was clear: Talented players aren't supposed to leave Big Red Country.

"Every kid growing up is a Nebraska fan, no matter what," said Bates, a Cyclone freshman. "You've got the Tommie Fraziers, the Eric Crouches ... you've got all these great players.

"It's really tough to leave the state."

Bates says the pranks were harmless and good-natured. Still, it was a messy situation.

"I know his car got egged a couple of different times," said his father, Phillip Sr. "As a matter of fact, they egged his sister's car a couple of times this week."

The latest incident was likely motivated by the fact Iowa State (1-3) visits the No. 25 Cornhuskers (3-1) on Saturday.

Bates is among seven Nebraskans on the Cyclones' roster, but he has a family legacy in Lincoln.

His father was a fullback for the Cornhuskers in 1980 and '81.

"His mother wanted him to go to Nebraska, and still thinks he should be in Lincoln," Phillip Sr. said. "I think he's made a better choice, and in the long run that's going to be better for him."

Phillip Jr. was a record-setting passer at Omaha North High School, throwing for 2,963 yards in two seasons.

His first scholarship offer came from Nebraska coach Bill Callahan, three games into his junior year. Iowa State offered a few months later.

"I appreciate that," Bates said. "Coach Callahan was a great guy, but I just liked the Cyclones.

"My dad was like, 'Keep looking around.' "

Bates began having second thoughts last winter when Dan McCarney stepped down as Iowa State's coach.

New coach Gene Chizik called him two days after being hired.

"Coach Chizik never tells you any lies," Bates said. "He tells you straight up. It may not be what you want to hear, but it's the truth.

"That's why I like it here."

Callahan recruited Bates for his athleticism. Chizik told the 6-foot-2, 189-pound Bates he would be given a chance to play quarterback.

"That's a big thing for Phil," his father said. "And we trust that they're going to give him that opportunity."

Bates has appeared in a half-dozen plays this season, both as quarterback and receiver. His 38-yard catch set up the decisive field goal in a 15-13 win over Iowa.

On Saturday, he could find himself lining up against familiar foes such as childhood friend Cortney Grixby.

"It's one of those things where if you're offered by Nebraska, there's a lot of pressure from the state to commit," said Grixby, who plays cornerback for the Cornhuskers.

"You've got to put your foot down and do what's best for you. (Bates) did what he had to do, and it's working out well for him."

I didn't realize the passion they had in Nebraska about letting highly touted kids leave.

I'm sure the talk radio guys trashed Iowa State more than Bates himself.

All the evidence you need that the average Nebraska football fan is about half a step away from your average cult member. Good grief.

I can tell you that the most important topic of the day in Nebraska, every day, is what's going on with Husker football. It could be recruits, injury reports, what the coach ate for breakfast, doesn't matter. It will be the lead story on every channel's evening news and will monopolize the sports segment of the broadcast. For a while I thought baseball season was over, but then I just realized that Husker football had started. It's pretty sickening, but it's all they have here.

I am fairly certain Bates will do something special tomorrow in the game.

Nice to see that we beat Nebraska out for Bates. Hard to believe especially since they offered him first.

Re: When 'Husker recruit chooses ISU, things can get messy *updated*

I say coolest thing in the world would be starting Bates and just running the option with him and Bass and Robinson all day long and show the Huskers that the option still works 1 and what they could have had had they been able to get Bates. Bates is definitely the most talented kid we have stolen from Nebraska is recent memory, Stevie was a pretty good one, but yea, Bob Montgomery was a good one, Jon Davis was one of the better ones, Nick Leaders of course! aside from those guys though we really havn't been all too successful in the state, Caleb Berg has been decent, Brandon Johnson has been decent.

I thought it was funny when someone (John Walters I think) asked James Smith about "going home" this weekend, and he said "I'm from Council Bluffs that's in Iowa".

haha it really isn't, but yea people can pretend, but by all technicalities it is a part of Iowa, just most everyone there is a Husker fan so it just seems like Nebraska, but actually he is from Haiti, so unless we play the University of Haiti, I don't think he would really be going home
