    Baseball's draft is now ruined

Thanks to Selig and the idiot owners, there is now a cap on how much a team can spend on international free agents and players in the draft. So dumb. Two sport athletes will now have a much easier decision to make. Bubba Starling goes to Nebraska instead of being drafted by the Royals if these rules were in place.

This sucks. This really hurts small market teams like the Royals, who have figured out the best way to compete (when you can't compete for the Top Free Agents) it to spend a ton on the draft.

I think 2.9 million if I read it right. Just for comparison, the Rangers spent over 17 million on last years draft.

It won't keep guys from playing ball, but it will hold the small market teams down. Right now, teams like the Pirates, Royals, Rays are building by spending on the draft... Teams would pass on guys thinking they were unsignable and small market teams would overpay in the 5th-10th roung to sign. Now those guys will get drafted higher and likely sign with the big market teams.

I think the 2.9 is the max for the #1 slot, everything else going slightly down from there.

If those small market teams were actually spending their own money, rather than the money they receive from the big market teams via revenue sharing, you might have a point.

Nothing new about this approach. This is happening in all paid sports. The rookies are not going to get the veterans' cash. This happened in hockey. This is what NBAS wants.

It looks like a big blow to small market teams initially, but I think this may actually protect them.

Without these protections, it would only be a matter of time before the big market teams start outspending the small market teams in the draft and international market.

Only temporarily. It's become pretty common knowledge that this is a market inefficiency. It would only be matter of time before the big-market teams catch on. You wouldn't want to be seeing the Yankees outspend the Royals by $20 million on the international market.
