What happens if Tech beats Baylor?

So as of right now 8 Big 12 teams are bowl eligible. Sure enough there are 8 bowls with Big 12 ties. However Texas Tech is sitting at 5-6 with a home game against Baylor still to go. If the Red Raiders take it, we'll have 9 eligible teams. 1 Big 12 team will fall entirely off the map and end up as a fill-in somewhere. Who will it be? My money is on Missouri.

To make things a little more interesting there are 35 bowls (70 bowl-playing teams) and currently 65 bowl-eligible teams with 18 more that have the potential to get to 6 wins. If the cards fall in the right places there may not be an open spot somewhere for the 9th team out of the Big 12.

I haven't seen much out of Tech since the Oklahoma game. I think our beat down just completely took the wind out of their sails. They seemed to show some life against Missouri, but lost anyway. I don't like their odds to put it all together and beat Baylor.

There are 7 bowls with B12 ties, not 8 this year.

With our attendance and traveling reputation being good, we will be fine. Now Missouri on the other hand, just horrible horrible crowd on Senior day against Tech and they NEVER travel.

That sounds plausible. Some no-name bowl is going to take a 6-6 Conference USA or WAC team instead of a 7-5 Missouri team.

Seriously...when was the last time a Big 12 team with 6 wins did NOT get a bowl invitation? Has it ever happened? I remember a 6-5 ISU team that stayed home one year, but that was before the Big 12 (and the explosion of meaningless bowls).

    There are 8.

    From ESPN Big 12 Blog:

"Here goes this week's bowl projections:
Tostitos Fiesta Bowl: Oklahoma State vs. BCS
AT&T Cotton Bowl: Oklahoma vs. SEC
Valero Alamo Bowl: Kansas State vs. Pac-12
Insight Bowl: Baylor vs. Big Ten
Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl: Texas A&M vs. Pac-12
Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas: Texas vs. Big Ten
New Era Pinstripe Bowl: Missouri vs. Big East
TicketCity Bowl: Iowa State vs. Big Ten"

Are you forgetting about the BCS? A slot is reserved for the Big 12 champ if they are not playing in the championship game.

There are 7...Ticket City alternates. It is supposed to be CUSA vs B10. The only reason it is being listed is because it appears that CUSA cannot fill all their slots.

Look at the Ticket City link below...it says nothing about the B12 being involved this year:

The TicketCity Bowl is Big 10 vs. Conf USA. Conf USA will be short with bowl selections so ESPN has us going there as an At large. So there are 7 tie ins this year with Big 12.

TicketCity isn't affiliated with the Big 12. The bowl projections predict that CUSA won't fill their allotment, and the writer speculated that ISU would get the fill-in spot. (either that or the Military Bowl)

KU was left out of the bowls one year with a 6-6 record. I believe that is the only time a Big 12 school has been left out.

And there are several more bowls now than when that happened. First, I don't see Tech beating Baylor. Second, I don't see a 6-6 Big 12 team getting left out.

The BEST thing would be for KU to upset MU, have Tech beat Baylor, and have no bowl slot available for MU. But even in that wild scenario, some bowl would rather have a BCS team than a crap conference team.

The C-USA or WAC team would probably travel better than Mizzou

I got it, I got it. I stand corrected.

Re: What happens if Tech beats Baylor?

I am confident we'll get better bowl than Mizzou. Plus, IIRC, the Big12 bowls are not required to pick based on standings.
    1. We travel better than Mizzou
    2. If the bowl wants to have good relationships with Big 12, they'll prioritize Big12 team than a SEC team
    3. The publicity: at least until the end of the season, I think we'll be known as "the team that started the BCS mess"

I could sit here and write about how MU attendance was BETTER than ISU's last week. Or how Missouri has travelled well to meaningful bowl games, and less well when the games don't matter. But who cares?

Bowls care only about the money fans bring to the city. TV networks care only about the eyeballs watching that they can sell to advertisers. NEITHER care about the competition or rewards offered to the teams on the field.

If you hate what money and TV are doing to college football, let's all agree to keep discussion on the things that really matter: wins, losses, competitor strength, coaching, recruiting, offense, defense, special teams, etc.

And let's agree to leave out all the extraneous stuff that only matter to executives who make money off of these student-athletes: bowl "prestige", attendance, traveling "reputation," TV markets, TV coverage, gameday atmosphere, etc.

If we all did this, the Monster Thread would be dead in a day.
