    737 landing at Stillwater, OK

Big advantage to OK State football teams to be able to fly directly to Stillwater. Anyone know of plans for Ames airport to have similar capabilities?

Is that T Boone International Airport? I'm going to say absolutely no chance.

Define how it's a big advantage?

Re: 737 landing at Stillwater, OK

Where does the Iowa State football team fly from? Ankeny? Des Moines? Either way, I don't think that's a big disadvantage.
It might be a disadvantage for venues like Hilton when bidding for events, but I don't think this is a disadvantage for our football program

They fly out of Des Moines.

It would be really nice to fly home to Ames get in your car and go back the dorm/apt.

Instead it's land in Des Moines, load 3 buses and head to the Jacobson Building. Kind of a pain.

Re: 737 landing at Stillwater, OK

As curt said football fly's out of Des Moines. For ISU it would be huge, for the visiting teams it's a toss up, your probably going to be staying in the Des Moines area anyway so why not just fly into there. Weather permitting ISU and visiting basketball does fly into and out of Ames.

There are two things working against AMW (Ames airport) one is length of runway. I actually was curious about all this earlier this fall and AMW has one runway that is somewhat doable but it is around 2,000 feet shorter than comparable airports in the conference such as Waco's. That same runway is the only one with an ILS (Instrument Landing System) depending on the winds what if they have to use the other runway.

Lengthening the runways and adding an ILS to both runways would be significant but probably more for basketball. Basketball and performers coming to Hilton are in Citations, Learjets, Gulfstreams and Falcons. Stuff that already regularly lands there.

It would be probably around $100 million in improvements and how much would it get utilized 6-12 weekends a year? Not sure how much it's worth it. I also doubt that Haps or AMW has steps that will reach to the door on a 737.

I don't know about landings, but for takeoffs, we could always invest in rocket boosters.

Just get a treadmill. We won't need much of a runway then.
