    Des Moines Hotel Help

I know very little about Des Moines, so I thought I'd ask some of you for help. I bought tickets to the George Strait concert at Wells Fargo Arena for my husband for Christmas, and am looking for recommendations for hotels near there, preferably in walking distance. Would love to not spend a fortune, but I know prices are jacked up for the concert. I can look up hotels by distance, but it's just hard to tell how close it really is without knowing the area. The proximity and being in a safe area are really my only criteria. The Quality Inn, Hyatt, and Embassy Suites are alreay sold out. Thanks for any help!

I would go to Holiday Inn-Mercy Hospital.

The Marriott and the Holiday Inn are both good nearby options. The Holiday Inn might be a little closer (but on the other side of 235) and probably $50-$100 cheaper, too.

Renassance Savery would be you next best option. Great location on the skywalk and it puts you just 4/5 blocks south of Well Fargo Arena (to the north) and just 2 blocks from Court Avenue Entertainment District (to the sourth). You'll be able to park you car and not have to drive again. If this is full, I'd go Downtown Marriot. Hotel Fort Des Moines might be cheaper, but you'll walk several blocks further (which is not a bad deal either if you don't mind the walk).

Not bad for location to the arena , but you put yourself kind of on an island to do anything else since you're on the wrong side of downtown (and I-235 for that matter) for entertainment/restaurant options (at least within walking distance)>

here's a link to a map of the nearby hotels:

Wells Fargo isn't label here, but it is just south of #5 (Quality Inn).

I agree with the Renassance as it is maybe a 5 minute walk to WF through the skywalk. I looked at the rate for the night of the concert and it looked like it was $130.

    Re: Des Moines Hotel Help

Probably not a big consideration, but it looks like several of them are in various stages of remodeling...

    Re: Des Moines Hotel Help

Thanks everyone. This is exactly the kind of info I was looking for. I had been leaning toward the Holiday Inn, as it's a bit cheaper, but the info regarding it's location swayed me to the Savery (for now at least) How would the Suites at 800 be for location? The Fort Des Moines is significantly cheaper, but reviews are spotty at best. Any experiences there?

    Re: Des Moines Hotel Help

^ The Suites - location? Well, it is closer to things on the western side of downtown (Centro, Temple for Performing Arts, Sculpture Garden, etc) but your further away from the Wells Fargo arena and the Court Avenue District...and might make a trek to the East Village unwalkable (depending on how much walking you like to do...or the weather).

Hotel Fort DM has great history ,but badly needs updating. They were set to become a Hilton Hotel, but have struggled to secure the financing needed for upgrades. That said, if you were going in with the idea to save some money, I think you'd be fine there. You also get the advantage of a great restaurant (Django) and Raccoon River Brewery nearby not to mention Panera accross the street.

    Re: Des Moines Hotel Help

I'm not sure if this will help, but here's a map of downtown. The hotel buildings are on here, but not marked but if you look at the hotel address, you can find them (or get pretty close) and help give you an idea how many blocks each is from other things you might be interested in.
